Benny "Ben" E. Johnston, Jr.

Deacon Benny “Ben” E. Johnston, Jr., a beloved figure in our community, passed away at the age of 83 on August 22, 2024, the Feast of the Queenship of Mary. He was born on September 16, 1940, in Smelterville, ID. Deacon Ben was a husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather, great-grandfather, physical therapist, and entrepreneur, but he was happiest when on the water. He spent his life enriching the lives of those around him with his unwavering kindness, generosity, and humor. Deacon Ben received his bachelor’s degree from Washington State University. Following graduation, he moved on to Stanford where he received his Physical Therapy degree. Ben was a pioneer in the realm of private practice physical therapy in Tacoma, WA. Ben also became a leader of the American Physical Therapy Association and was elected President of the Private Practice Association. Ben was a management consultant, owner of Physical Therapy clinics, and an innovative, mentor widely respected in the Physical Therapy profession. He went on to build a successful career pioneering data collection regarding physical therapy functional outcomes, as a cofounder of Focus on Therapeutic Outcomes (FOTO). His colleagues often spoke of his dedication, work ethic, and his ability to inspire those around him. Deacon Ben’s greatest pride was his family. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Mary Jo Marino Johnston, and his children Benny (Beth), Julie (Brian), David, William, and Anthony along with 8 grandchildren. Ben was a beloved brother to Allan (Trish). He was preceded in death by his parents, Ben, Sr. and Norma Johnston, and his brother Cecil. Outside of his professional life, Benny was a devoted family man and a pillar of his church community. He was an active member of the Cathedral of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus where he served as Deacon for several years and was known for his warm and welcoming nature. Deacon Ben was vital in developing and organizing the Haiti Outreach Program. Deacon Ben will be remembered for his boundless generosity, his incredible patience, and his ability to make every person he met feel special. His legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched with his kindness and compassion. Deacon Ben Johnston will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His spirit of generosity and love will continue to inspire those who knew him. A receiving of friends will be held on Thursday, August 29, 2024, from 5-7PM at Rose Funeral & Cremation - Mann, 6200 Kingston Pike. The funeral will be held on Friday, August 30, 2024, at 10:00 AM at the Cathedral of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. The family invites friends and loved ones to join them in honoring Deacon Ben’s memory and sharing their stories of his remarkable life.
