Cecil Chandler Dale

Cecil Chandler Dale passed away Tuesday, July 5, 2011 at age 101. She was born on a very cold day, May 4, 1910 on a hillside farm near Halls. She attended Halls High School and graduated from Knoxville High School and the University of Tennessee. She taught fourth grade for many years in Knoxville and Decatur GA and was a long-term member of the Broadway Baptist Church, Knoxville, First Baptist Church Decatur, GA and First Baptist Church, Sevierville. She had many lifelong friends from these relationships. Cecil Dale loved her family: her parents Eva* and Vernon* Chandler, sister Lucile,* brother Claxton, husband John* and his sisters Irene* and Mary Elizabeth and brother Robert* and her children and spouses John, Emily* and Janet Dale, Diana and Ron*Simpkins, Patricia and Arlen Monteau, David and Rose Marie Dale, her grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins of her extended Tennessee family now stretched across the country. (*deceased) Cecil excelled as a teacher, homemaker, designer, painter, gardener, scrabble-player and athlete. She was a member of the first class enrolled at Halls High School and played basketball there. Until retirement, she loved to challenge 4th graders to a foot race. In 1925 she was a member of the national champion 4H cattle judging team and in 1938 won a national prize for her plans for kitchen remodeling. She and her husband John created a welcoming home with wonderful meals, warm hospitality and stimulating conversations. Cecil Dale had a life-long commitment to Christian missions and building good international relations. She traveled widely in the US and abroad and served as a short term missionary in Argentina, Korea, England and Kenya. Later she opened her home for missionaries on furlough from around the world. This continually brought the opportunities and challenges of our world to her. Her life encourages us all to strive to be kinder, more generous and more helpful to others. Funeral arrangements are by Rose-Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel, 6200 Kingston Pike Knoxville. The family will receive friends there, Friday July 10 from 5 to 7pm with services to follow at 7pm. Her family gratefully acknowledges her care and caregivers at Little Creek.
