John Dorflinger III

John Everett Dorflinger, Ill, died the 28th day of March, 2023 at his home in Knoxville, Tennessee. John was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, on March 31, 1968. John was a 1986 graduate of Farragut High School and a 1991 graduate of The University of Tennessee College of Architecture. John was preceded in death by his parents, John E. Dorflinger, Jr. and Martha Shanks Dorflinger. His grandparents, with whom he was privileged to spend much of his early life, were the late J.E. Dorflinger, Sr. and Nena Coleman Dorflinger, and the late Robert Lee Wright and Lucille Hawkins Shanks Wright, all of whom resided in Cleveland, Tennessee. John is survived by aunt and uncle, Gail Dorflinger Marino and Gary O. Marino of Boca Raton, Florida, and their children, Tanya Marino Casey, Kimberly Powell Marino, and David Eric Marino. In his architectural career, Mr. Dorflinger worked on several Knoxville area structures including the Tickle Engineering Building at the University of Tennessee as well as Estabrook Hall and other science buildings, the original East Skyboxes of Neyland Stadium as well as the first UT Jumbo Tron, the Knoxville Convention Center, the Harper Street Lofts in Maryville, the Lofts at the Knoxville Downtown YMCA, various projects at the Tennessee School for the Deaf and updates at Maryville College. He completed these projects and many others while associated with five different architectural firms: Barber and McMurray; McCarty, Holsaple, McCarty; Johnson Architecture, Duane Grieve and Associates, and Marble Alley Development. Mr. Dorflinger played tennis during high school and college. Although architecture was his lifelong passion, he contributed to a variety of civic events and organizations and was an avid Vol for Life. He also worked tirelessly in the restoration and revitalization of Knoxville's Old City as well as Downtown Knoxville and chose to design and establish his personal residence at the Fire Street Lofts. John’s headstone will be placed in Putnam County near the final resting places of five generations of family including his parents, John E. Dorflinger, Jr. and Martha Shanks Dorflinger, and maternal grandparents, the late Robert Lee Wright and Lucille Hawkins Shanks Wright and the late William Maxwell Shanks, Jr. The Celebration of Life will be held be held at 2:00 PM on August 26, 2023, at Rose Funeral and Cremation - Mann, 6200 Kingston Pike, Knoxville, TN 37919.
