Joseph Allen Martin

Martin, Joseph Allen - age 93 passed away Sunday May 20,2012. He was a member of Second Presbyterian Church. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary. He is survived by children Mary Jo Randall (Robert), Douglas Martin (Sara), Gary Martin, and Ann Martin, nine grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren. He was born on August 10, 1918 to Rod James and Evelyn Adams Martin into a cotton farm family of five children in Hart County, Georgia. He attended a one-room elementary school, and he graduated from Rabun Gap-Nacoochee High School and Junior College in Georgia, where he met Mary Addington, his beloved wife of 65 years. He was in military service at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, and later he served in Patton's army after the D-Day invasion of Europe in the 159th Combat Engineer Battalion in the Battle of the Bulge. After the war he graduated with degrees from Clemson University and then earned his doctorate from the University of Minnesota. He retired in 1988 as professor and head of the Department of Agricultural Economics at the University of Tennessee after 41 years of service. The subject matter of his teaching and research dealt with the problem of development, use and conservation of natural resources--land, water, air, environment, etc. During this time he served as mentor to six Ph.D. students and numerous Masters students and authored or coauthored some 40 technical publications. In retirement he enjoyed golfing, taking care of his lawn and garden, volunteer work, and time spent with family and friends in his neighborhood, church, and retirement community. Family and friends will gather at 9:30 am Friday May 25, 2012 for the Interment service by the Volunteer State Veterans Honors Guard at the Veterans Cemetery on Lyons View Pike. Family and friends are also invited to attend the memorial service at 2 pm Friday May 25, 2012 with Dr. Brian Wilson officiating at Second Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends immediately following the memorial service. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made in his honor to Second Presbyterian Church,2829 Kingston Pike, Knoxville, TN 37919.
