Rachel Nall Cochran

Cochran, Rachel Nall, age 91, widow of Charles Cochran, Jr., died September 17, 2011 at Shannondale Health Care Center. Born in Mayfield, KY, she was the daughter of the late Mary B. and Burie C. Nall. For over 50 years, Rachel was a member of Church Street United Methodist Church where, over time, she served in various leadership roles including first woman chairperson of the Administrative Board, Board of Trustees, and Finance Committee. She was a member of United Methodist Women, Christian Home Sunday School Class and a charter member of the Holston Conference Historical Society. She was a life member of the Committee of One Hundred and the Asa G. Candler Society, Candler School of Theology, Emory University, Atlanta; life member of Friends of Wesley's Chapel and the Museum of Methodism, London, England; Trustee of Epworth Old Rectory, Epworth, England; former member of the Executive Committee of the World Methodist Church and organizer and first president of Friends of the World Methodist Museum, Lake Junaluska; eight year trustee of Holston Conference Colleges; trustee emerita and member of the Athenian Society of Tennessee Wesleyan University, Athens; and delegate to numerous World Methodist Conferences. Rachel was also a life member of the Lakemoor Hills Garden Club, the Tennessee Federation of Garden Clubs, Inc. and the National Garden Clubs, Inc. and had been a charter member and treasurer of the International Nursing Services, Inc. She was recipient of the Dean's Medal, Candler School of Theology, Emory University; Seat of Honor Award from the World Methodist Counsel and the Francis Asbury Award given by the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry of the United Methodist Church. She was awarded two honorary degrees from Tennessee Wesleyan University. Rachel was preceded in death by her sisters, Charlotte Nall Eddins and June Nall Marcum. Survivors include nieces Vanda O'Reilly and husband Thomas, Gretchen Brown, Andrea Gottler, Martha Cochran and Merry Cochran; nephews Philip Marcum, Paul Marcum, Charles Cochran and wife Helen, and Bruce Cochran; great-nieces Caitlin Wingardner and husband Tim, Kendall Gottler, Rachel Anne Marcum and Elizabeth, Emily and Sarah Cochran; great-nephews Gabriel Brown and wife Ruth, Andrew Brown and Benjamin Marcum; four great great-nieces and nephews. Family and friends are invited to attend funeral services at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, September 25, 2011, at Church Street United Methodist Church (900 Henley Street • Knoxville, TN 37902) with Rev. Andy Ferguson, Rev. Jan Buxton Wade, Rev. Cabel Trent, and Rev. Sarah Varnell officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be in the church chapel from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. preceding funeral service. Honorary pallbearers will be former members of the Christian Home Class and members of United Methodist Women Circle 4.
