Richard Carl (Dick) Borreson

Richard Carl (Dick) Borreson, age 83, of Knoxville, Tennessee, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 3, 2018. Dick was born in Sherburne, New York on June 17, 1934. He attended Sherburne High School and Alfred State College. As a young man Dick became an auto mechanic. He worked with his father and brother in the family business known as Borreson and Sons which owned four service stations located in the Village of Sherburne. Later Dick began a very successful career in retail management spanning forty years beginning as a store manager with King’s Department Stores located in the north east. He was promoted to District Manager for the south east division and relocated to Knoxville in 1972 then retired from King’s. His career then culminated in a management position in 1982 with Walmart where he traveled many states opening stores and training personnel. He returned to Knoxville in 1993 retiring seven years later. Post-retirement, Dick joined the team of Salon Visage in Knoxville where he brought his retail skills and set in motion an inventory management system for the salon. Dick had a passion for playing trumpet in the Sherburne High School Drum and Bugle Corps. He returned home often to join the Alumni Band in annual pageants. A highlight in Dick’s life was when, at the age of 75, he joined his brother Jack and close friends Jack Howard and Chuck Ellis as they marched with the Alumni Band at the 60th Annual Sherburne Pageant of the Bands. Among other things, Dick enjoyed playing golf, deer hunting in the mountains of Upstate New York, tinkering in his shop, and driving his convertible through the “Dragon Tail” of Tennessee. Dick was a member of The Episcopal Church of the Ascension where he served as an Usher and Greeter. He was a member of The Brotherhood of Saint Andrew and a volunteer for Family Promise of Knoxville. In recent years he and his wife, Peggy, attended worship services at Wallace Memorial Baptist Church and were members of The Faithful Followers Connect Group. Richard is preceded in death by his parents Carl Arthur and Jessie Cornett Borreson; his first wife and mother of his children, Nancy Jean Horton-Johnston Borreson; Dick is survived by his wife, Peggy Borreson; son, Brent Richard Borreson; daughter, Jamie Borreson Fleeman and son-in-law, Chuck; granddaughter, Audrey Jean Fleeman-Rutherford and husband, Brian; grandson, Charles “Chip” Richard Fleeman, III; great grandson, Asher Charles Rutherford; Max Ramos, whom Dick loved like a grandson; brother, Jack Borreson and wife, Nicki; sister, Karen Engelbert and husband, Bruce; sister-in-law, Ann Bowling; several nieces, nephews and other extended family. The family offers special thanks to the loving caregivers at both Amedisys Hospice and Westmoreland Health and Rehabilitation Center. We are forever grateful. A Celebration of Dick’s Life will be held 4:00 pm, Friday, June 22, 2018 at The Episcopal Church of the Ascension followed by a private interment. The Reverend Christopher W. Hogin officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the Fellowship Hall.
