Dr. Roger Howell Millwood

Roger H. Millwood, age 71, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, September 29, 2017. Roger was preceded in death by his parents, Virgil Clayton Millwood and Eva Lee Phillips Millwood, an infant sister, five brothers (Virgil, Harris, Henry, Larry, and Wallace) and three sisters (Louise, Charlotte, and Vivian). He is survived by his wife, Pam Millwood, and their four children, Zach Millwood, Eva Millwood (Bryan), Haley Stedelin (Brian), and Hunter Millwood (Meredith); young grandchildren Clayton, John Henry, and Sadie; sisters Faye Holman, Marceille Roper, and Patricia Reid; 24 nieces and nephews, 47 grand-nieces and -nephews, and special sister-in-law Becky Hogsed. Roger was born and raised on a Georgia farm where the family raised row crops and cotton, plowing with mules until the purchase of their first tractor. He enjoyed sports, playing high school football and college-level tennis. After high school, Roger enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed in Colorado Springs, CO, and Magong, Taiwan, as a communications specialist. Upon an honorable discharge, he enrolled in junior college, where he met his future wife, Pam, his chemistry class lab partner. Roger went on to graduate from the Georgia Institute of Technology and then the Medical College of Georgia, with Pam, his mother, and oldest sister, Louise, in attendance at graduation. He completed his internship and residency in Emergency Medicine at Charlotte Memorial Hospital in North Carolina before the family moved to to Fort Worth, TX, where Roger reentered the Air Force as a medical officer, stationed at Carswell USAF Regional Hospital for four years. He was again honorably discharged from the Air Force, and the family moved to Cashmere, WA, before finally settling in East Tennessee in 1988. In Knoxville, Roger spent 30 years as an emergency medicine physician at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center, Baptist Hospital, and, finally, Turkey Creek Medical Center. After many hours of training, he transitioned in 2015 to a new position as a Wound Care Specialist at Tennova Wound Care and Hyperbaric Center, where he worked until his retirement in May of 2017. Throughout his career, Roger gained great respect for the many physicians, nurses, techs, and other health care professionals with whom he worked, and was well respected by co-workers and patients alike. Roger was a loving and dedicated husband and father, giving his children a love of the outdoors, gardening, fishing, conservation, good country music, and simple pleasures. He enjoyed sitting in his porch rocker with a glass of Pam's iced tea, watching chickens scratch around in the front yard after a long day of mending fences and trimming brush. Toward the end of his life, Roger took great joy in playing with his grandchildren and telling stories around the dinner table with his family. Friends are welcome to join the family at Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel on Kingston Pike, Wednesday, October 4th, 2017, from 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM for a reception and celebration of Roger's life. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Young Williams Animal Center, 3201 Division Street, Knoxville, TN 37919 or the Ruffed Grouse Society, 451 McCormick Road, Coraopolis, PA 15108.
