Ronald J. Mauer

Ronald "Ron" Joseph Mauer, age 88, of Knoxville passed away peacefully at home on January 30, 2023. Ron was a son, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was born in Ohio on July 19, 1934, often called Ronnie by family. He went on to schools near every university where his father was coaching across the country. He loved to read and was an adventurous young man who became an Eagle Scout. He was influenced by many walks of life and absorbed everything around him. Ron served his country in the United States Army in the 11th and 82nd airborne division while being stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, “Home of the Airborne”. His service to his country was his greatest duty. After being honorably discharged, he returned to the University of Florida and graduated. He remained a reservist for his country. After graduation, Ron worked for many different large construction companies in the southeast. He later joined the Ford Motor Company headquarters in Dearborn, Michigan. He was in the dealership facilities division, over all the Canadian and Chicago markets. The oil embargo sent Ron on his next journey back to Knoxville. His mother, Grace, was sick, and his father, John, said “Get to Knoxville. I want you home!”. After working for a few local companies, Ron landed in the Knox County Codes Dept as Chief Plans Examiner in the early 80s, at which he stayed for over 30 years. He saw many political changes, walking the floors of the City County Building every day, acknowledging everyone in his passing. Ron always loved to talk. Ron has many accomplishments, including being a State of Tennessee certified building inspector, influential in the startup of Knox County Construction Board of Appeals, SBCCI Seismic Design Committee, IBC Committees, Advisory Committee for Pellissippi State, Knoxville Technical Society member and past president, and East TN Building Officials Association (ETBOA) member and past president, VP, treasurer and secretary. He was influential in Knox County, adopting SBCCI Codes/IBC Codes to follow for all buildings in Knox County. He did more than can be mentioned for this community. His greatest accomplishments were helping anyone that came in his office, always willing to take the extra time with any contractor, engineer, and architect that came to visit. With the belief of sharing his knowledge, he had an open door policy. He would always say “Remember your roots. Your family- they are your foundation.” He always thanked his parents for the person he became in life. Ron accomplished this in more ways for which he gave himself credit. Ron is preceded by parents Coach John W. and Grace L. Bapst (Pabst) Mauer, brother Jack, wife of over 50 years Sue M. Spence Mauer, and many friends. Ron is survived by oldest daughter and wingman Michelle (Bill), daughter Maureen (Bob); grandchildren and great-grandchildren Susanne (Christopher), “ his son” John, Ashley, Mitchell Joseph, Lily and Will. His animals were his world. He leaves behind beagles aka “The Hounds” Lucy and Linus, lab puppies Ace and Captain Blackjack Pershing, and Harley, his cat whom stayed with him in his last moments on earth, along with his family and all his dogs.
