Ruth Shipley

Alice "Ruth" Shipley age 94 of Knoxville, Tennessee born September 24, 1930, made a peaceful transition to her eternal home in heaven on Friday, January 3rd, 2025. She was a faithful member of Victory Baptist Church in Knoxville and allowed God to use her in many ways. She contributed to the children’s camp every year and when she was called upon, she was willing to help in any way she could. In her younger days she was a Sunday School Teacher and worked in the Nursery at Grove City Baptist Church in Knoxville. She had a beautiful singing voice and passed that gift and talent on to her children. Ruth was a devoted wife and a loving and compassionate mother. She enjoyed spending time with friends and family and uplifting those around her with encouraging words and laughter. She was an inspiration to everyone who knew her. She was a wise woman and gave godly advice. She loved crocheting, browsing Facebook, color by number, playing solitary and other games on her tablet and phone. Ruth was a humble woman of faith and will be missed dearly by all those who loved her. She is preceded in death by her parents, Henry Olaf Brown and Edna Mary Cowden; husband, William Abraham Shipley; sons, Donald Glenn Shipley and Ronald Lynn Shipley; daughter, Glenda Kay England; grandson, Jerry Ray Shipley, Jr.; granddaughter Alisa Ann "Annie" Shipley; sons-in-law, Wayne Scarbough and Steve Ballard; brothers, William Cowden Brown, Oliver Lee Brown, and Edward J. Brown, Sr.; sister, Wilma Jean Shipley and special brother-in-law Roscoe C Shipley Jr. Ruth was survived by her children; William Roscoe Shipley and wife Cassie; MaryAnn Scarbough, Carolyn Ballard, Dorothy and husband Frank Mitchell. Jerry Ray Shipley and wife Sharon; son-in-law Gary England and daughter-in-law Debra Rainbolt Shipley.; Sisters, Shirley Ann Ivester and Mary Louis Luttrell. Ruth had 22 Grandchildren, 38 Great Grandchildren and 7 Great Great Grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews, and special devoted friends, Wayne and Mary Lee. The family will receive friends from 5-7:00 pm Thursday, January 9, 2025, at Rose Funeral & Cremation-Broadway. A funeral service will follow at 7:00 pm with Rev. Henry Brown, II and Rev. Scott Lee officiating. Family and friends will gather at 10:45 am Friday, January 10, 2025, at Highland Memorial Cemetery for a 11:00 am graveside service.
