Samuel F. Fowler

FOWLER, Samuel F. Jr. – age 82 of Knoxville died, May 5, 2011 from prostate cancer first diagnosed in 1991. He was the oldest son of S. Frank and Aubin Z. Fowler, the stepson of Catherine C. Fowler, the brother of Robert Z. Fowler and James L. Fowler (deceased) and Ellen Soper, John Fowler, Louise Fowler-Daves, and Marie Alcorn and cousin of, the many descendants of General James A. and Lucy H. Fowler and Robert L. and Aubin W. Zabriskie. We, his widow, Josephine Ann Gordon Fowler, his four children and our spouses, Elizabeth and Michael Cassiday, Aubin and Bill Lewis, Frank and Jennifer Fowler, and Gordon and Ellen Fowler, and our grandchildren, Joseph, Patrick, John, and Robert Cassiday, Will and Ben Lewis, Craig and Jacob Fowler, and James, Mary Jo, and Aubin Fowler, wish to celebrate the grace of God for his life and briefly recount the example he set for us and our posterity. He was educated at the McCallie School, the University of Tennessee, and University of Virginia Law School. Christ came to him as a teenager and he responded in faith by serving the Sequoyah Hills Presbyterian Church as Deacon, Elder, Sunday school teacher, singer, and member of many committees. He was a devoted husband, parent and grandfather. He was a UT ROTC graduate and served 9 years as a lieutenant in the United States Army Reserve serving his last duty in the 489th Military Government Company. He was a partner in the law firms of Fowler Rowntree and Fowler, Wagner Myers & Sanger, and Holbrook Peterson & Smith. He served on the board and as an officer of many charitable and civic organizations. A memorial service will be held on Monday at Sequoyah Hills Presbyterian Church at 3:00 pm with Dr. L. Holton Siegling officiating. Family and friends will meet at 12:45 pm Monday for a 1:00 pm committal service at Greenwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Sequoyah Hills Presbyterian Church, 3700 Keowee Avenue, Knoxville, TN 37919-7711 or the East Tennessee Foundation, 625 Market St. # 1400, Knoxville, TN 37902-2219.
