Albert Hall Barnes Jr.

Albert Hall Barnes, Jr., age 89, of Knoxville, TN., and formerly of Fredericksburg, VA., passed away on Thursday, March 16, 2023. He was a member of Eastminster Presbyterian. He graduated James Monroe High School in Fredericksburg, VA., and then Virginia Polytechnic Institute Charlottesville, VA. He was lettered in track and field and Corps Cadets. Graduating in 1955 with a degree in Architecture. He along with his new wife, Gloria and infant daughter, Kay moved to Knoxville, TN., in 1956. He went to work as an Architect for Tennessee Valley Authority until 1965. After TVA Private Sector, he went on to work for Howden Barnes, Barnes and Moorefield, Architectural Associates. During this time he became a trial expert and Construction Specialist in roofing. In the 1990’s He was a Project Manager for a local firm, Barber & McMurray and Public Building Authority. He oversaw the design of Whittle Communications, restoration of the Andrew Johnson Hotel and Medical Arts building. As well as all public schools, libraries and government funded buildings in Knoxville. In 2002 he returned to the private sector and continued as a consultant in construction and roofing specialist to various Architecture and Engineering firms throughout the Southeast until retiring at the age of 82. Albert devoted much of his time with the local chapter of Sertoma Club and various other civic and professional groups including American Institute of Architecture, The University of Tennessee Faculty Club and Remote Area Medical located in Rockford, TN. His family were members of Sequoyah Hills Presbyterian Church until their move to Holston Hills, where he and Gloria became members of Eastminster Presbyterian Church. Albert and his wife Gloria enjoyed travelling the world in the early years of their 59 year marriage. As their family grew they enjoyed spending time at a family home in St. Petersburg, FL., as well as the home Albert designed and helped to build on Douglas Lake in Dandridge, TN., where his family continues to enjoy swimming, sailing and boating. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Gloria Barnes, daughter, Kay Adele Barnes, mother, Evelyn Parsons Barnes, father, Albert Hall Barnes, Sr., brother, William Ernest Barnes who passed on December 25, 1944 during the Battle of the Bulge; and sister, Mary Belle Green. He is survived and will be greatly missed by his daughter, Evelyn Diane Barnes and grandson, Dylan Drake Barnes-Gross. Family and friends will gather at Oak Hill Cemetery in Fredericksburg, VA., on Wednesday, March 22, 2023 for a 2:00 pm graveside service officiated by Rev. Gary Limbrick. The family would like to personally thank Renae Lucas, Angela Byrd and Brenda Britton for taking such good care of both Gloria and Albert during Gloria’s prolonged illness since her devastating stroke, and until her death in 2014. You all will be considered family in our hearts.
