Andrew Joseph Gettelfinger

Gettelfinger, Andrew Joseph Sr. peacefully passed away Saturday evening April 10, 2010 surrounded by his loving family at Mercy Hospital St. Mary’s. Andy was born June 2, 1925 in Palmyra, Indiana. Graduated Knoxville Catholic High School in 1944, served 2 years for his country in the Navy during WW ll aboard aircraft carriers Puget Sound & the Sargent Bay. Attended the University of Tennessee, Life member of Holy Ghost Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus. He married the love of his life Frances A. ( Chickie ) Mary on June 11th, 1949 with whom he created a legacy of faith and love. Founded Pride Oil Company which he co-owned with brothers Earl & Herman. At one time they operated 21 Gas stations & Convenient stores. Andy and his brothers also co-owned Kelso Oil Company founded by their father Herman J. Gettelfinger. He was also involved in oil & gas exploration, real estate developments, and many other local businesses. Preceded in death by parents Herman J. Gettelfinger & Agnes Huber Gettelfinger, brother Earl I. Gettelfinger and sisters Evelyn G. Worley & Norma G. Tucker. Survived by cherished, devoted wife of 60 years Chickie Gettelfinger, Children Linda G. & Paul Lawson, Diane Gettelfinger & Gary Scheafer, Mary Nelle G. & Glen Anderson, Ann G. & Todd Hepp, Sandy G. & Paul Mercandetti, Andrew Jr. ( Buddy ) & Maripat Gettelfinger, David & Rebecca Gettelfinger, Barbie G. & Mark Olsen. Also survived by 12 grandchildren Joann L. & Bryan Bingham, Ashley Lawson, Darren Anderson, Chris Crawford, Eric & Susan Crawford, Andrew Colt Sowders, Andrew J. Gettelfinger lll, Patrick Gettelfinger, Emily Gettelfinger, Alex Gettelfinger, Rebecca & Brittany Olsen. Brother and Sister in Law Herman E. & Nancy L. Gettelfinger, brother in law Ernest Tucker, brother in law and wife Frank & Bobbie C. Mary, also many cherished nieces, nephews and cousins in Knoxville and Indiana. Our thanks go out to the staff of Mercy Hospital St. Mary’s and Select Care. Funeral Mass 10:00 A.M. Thursday at Holy Ghost Catholic Church with Monsignor Xavier Mankel and Most Reverend Bishop James Vann Johnston officiating. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery. The family will receive friends 5:30 – 7:30 P.M. Wednesday at Rose Mortuary Broadway Chapel with a Holy Rosary at 7:30 P.M. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Saint Joseph’s and Knoxville Catholic High Schools were all eight of his children received their educations. He enjoyed hunting, Fishing, aviation, building homes & playing cards with family. He was a long time contributor & fan of U.T. athletics. His since of humor was tremendous along with his work ethic. His love enriched the lives of his eight children who are left with a wonderful example of faith and sacrifice. Andy’s greatest love and devotion was his family.
