Anne Dean Farmer McWhirter

Anne Dean Farmer McWhirter, age 90, of Knoxville, passed away Friday, August 24, 2018. Anne was a member and Elder of Second Presbyterian Church. She also was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution- James White Chapter; the National Society of Colonial Dames of America; First Families of Tennessee; Junior League of Knoxville; Knoxville Garden Club; The Gardeners; Cherokee Hills Garden Club; Delta Delta Delta; Topside Community Club; Sewing Club, and UT Band Sponsor. Anne was preceded in death by her parents Charles H. and Helen Ford Dean; husbands, Blaine J. Farmer, Jr., and B. Terrell McWhirter; brother, Charles H. Dean, Jr., and wife Lottie Dean, and step-son Tad McWhirter. She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Dean B. and Mary Farmer, Reid J. and Susan Farmer, and Charles F. and Mary Nell Farmer; grandchildren: Marianne L. Canada; Charles F. Farmer, Jr.; Sara Kate Ramsbottom; Helen D. Edwards; Dean B. Farmer, II, Scott J. Farmer; Kirk Farmer, and Elizabeth Stuart; great-grandchildren: Noah and Caleb Stuart and Addie Farmer; Lulu and Hugo Canada; Chili Farmer, Whitlow Ramsbottom; Ila, Flora, and May Edwards; D. B., Mattie and Jack Farmer; step-son John McWhirter; step-daughters Eleanor McWhirter and Francis Andrews and step-grandchildren Ashley, Lindsey, Audrey, Russell, Terrell, Hays, and Ann McWhirter; numerous nieces and nephews, and best friends, Miriam Widener, Julia Schriver, Dottie Barbour and Jenny Lynn Glover. Special thanks to Anne's caregivers, Dee Futrell, Rena Carrington, and Shay Lainez. Anne was a native Knoxvillian who raised her family while moving around the country until returning to Knoxville in 1972. Her commitment to family, Second Presbyterian Church, the Sewing Club, and her garden was second only to her poetry and going to Neyland Stadium for the Pride of the Southland Marching Band. She never met a stranger, and will be dearly missed by all who knew her. A Celebration of Life Service will be held 4:00 p.m., Sunday, September 2, 2018 at Second Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Tim Reynolds officiating. Interment is private. Pallbearers will be Grandsons, and Grandsons-in-Law. The family will receive friends from 2:30-4:00 p.m., preceding the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Second Presbyterian Church, 2829 Kingston Pike, Knoxville, TN 37919 or to the University of Tennessee Blaine J. Farmer, Jr. Drum Major Scholarship, UT Foundation, 600 Andy Holt Tower, Knoxville, TN 37996.
