Dr. Bennett Franklin Horton, Sr

Dr. Bennett Franklin Horton, Sr., age 88, departed this world on June 27, 2016. He was a retired anesthesiologist. His service to the medical field also included medical research in the area of hematology, and he served as medical missionary in what was then Rhodesia (today called Zimbabwe). He was a member of the American Medical Association, Tennessee Society of Anesthesiologists, American Society of Anesthesiologists, Knoxville Academy of Medicine, Nashville Academy of Medicine, Oxford College and Emory University Alumni Association, Medical College of Georgia Alumni Association, and Friends of the Sciences at Hiwassee College. Bennett served his county in World War II. He was stationed in Japan during the occupation of Japan following the surrender. He is survived by his wife and best friend of 61 years, Evelyn Hulme Horton; two daughters: Belinda Bowling (Michael) and Melanie Trotter (James) and one son, Ben Horton, Jr. Also left to mourn him are 6 grandchildren: Joseph Bowling (Sara), Justin Bowling (Kristi), Bethany Forbes (Alan), Bennett Horton, III (Nikita), William Horton (Deidre), and Victoria Trotter; 4 great-grandchildren: Jackson Bowling, Troy Forbes, Samuel Bowling, and Carter Bowling. Bennett was preceded in death by his parents, Kathleen Horton Emmett and Reece Horton as well as a sister, Evelyn Davis, a brother, Reece Horton, and a beloved grandson Brian Bowling. Bennett was a member of Church Street United Methodist Church, and the funeral service will take place at the Church at 11:00 a.m., Friday, July 1, 2016. The family will receive friends from 10:00-11:00 a.m., preceding the service. The interment graveside will take place at the Long's Chapel Fulbright Cemetery, Roger's Cove Road Lake Junaluska, N.C. The graveside service will be conducted by Long's Chapel United Methodist Church where Dr. and Mrs. Horton are affiliate members. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Church Street United Methodist Church or to the charity of choice .
