Betty Sue Biggs Doan

Betty Sue Biggs Doan After a 9-year battle with dementia, Betty, age 81 passed on June 2, 2017. She was born in Knoxville, on April 27, 1936. Throughout her life, she attended Eighth Avenue, Dutch Valley, and Central Churches of God. She graduated from Central High School in 1954, where she was member of the chorus. As a teenager in 1947, Betty sang in a trio with Pat Snyder and Marvlyn Buckner. She continued her love for singing by being an active member in the choir at every church she attended. She married J.V. Doan on June 25, 1955. She moved to Memphis while her husband attended dental school there, and then moved to Parris Island Marine Recruit Base in South Carolina while J.V. was in the Navy in 1957. She later moved back to Knoxville with her family in 1959. Betty and J.V’s daughter, Terri, was born in Memphis, and sons Joe and Mike, were born in Knoxville. Betty was an active member of the Chilhowee Elementary PTA, and she was recognized for outstanding contributions to the causes of children and youth. She also received a signal Honor-Life membership in the Tennessee Congress of Parents and Teachers. Betty also played an active role with the children of Eighth Avenue Church of God beside her good friend, Billie Metler. In addition, she was president of the 2nd District Dental Alliance in 1964 and 1965. She was active within the Girls Scout troop 425 in 1969. Betty also belonged to the Akima Club in 1972, and she was a member of the 18-hole golf group at Holston Hills Country Club from 1976 until she was no longer able to play the game she loved. She enjoyed reliving a hole-in-one that she made at Dorchester Golf Club in Fairfield Glades while playing with J.V. and longtime friends, Uriel and Lovenia Edde. Betty was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother (Oma). She was preceded in death by both maternal and paternal grandparents, (Biggs and Carrs); mother and father, Clark and Kate Biggs; mother and father-in-law, Joe and Mae Doan and Ruby Hall Doan; aunt, Stella Ruth Riley; long-time friends, Lovenia Edde, Linda Maples, and Doris Sharpe. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, J.V. Doan; daughter, Terri Geiser (Dennis); sons, Joe (Cheryl), Mike (Cindy); grandchildren, Bethany, Katelynn, Europe, Diamond, and Denver; sisters-in-law, Libby Barnhill and Sharon O’Toole. The family would like to express their gratitude to all of Betty’s caregivers, especially those at Elmcroft in Halls and Holston Rehab. The family will receive friends from 5-7:00 pm Sunday, June 4, 2017 at Central Church of God, 4721 Papermill Drive, Knoxville, TN 37909. Funeral services will follow at 7:00 pm with Pastor Jack Dean and Chaplain Mike Doan, Joe and Katelynn Doan officiating. Family and friends will meet at 10:45 am Monday, June 5, 2017 at Sherwood Memorial Gardens for an 11:00 am graveside service. In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made to the Smokey Mountain Children’s Home in Sevierville or Central Church of God.
