Rev. Cabel Winton Trent

Cabel Winston Trent, age 89 of Knoxville, passed away Thursday, January 19, 2017. He was born in Independence, VA, Grayson Co., September 22, 1927 to Stephen Alexander and Grace Maude Houk Trent, one of four children born in this second marriage for “Steve” Trent, whose first wife died. The other children were Edna Marie Patton Smith, Scott Washington, and June Preston Trent. There were five sisters and three brothers by the first marriage of Steve Trent: Walter Stark, Robert Roscoe, Kyle, Mae, Dell, Ollie, Pearl and Grace. An ordained Elder in the United Methodist Church and a member of the Holston Annual Conference, Cabel received his call to preach in his senior year of high school while a member of Flatrock United Methodist Church, Independence VA. He earned degrees at Hiwassee College and the University of Chattanooga (now UT, Chattanooga). He continued his education at Chandler School of Theology; additionally, he received training in Pastoral Counseling and Pastoral Care. His ministry included many United Methodist Churches in the Holston Conference: Etowah Circuit, Athens Parish, Ridgedale Memorial, Soddy, Englewood, Associate at Church Street, Jonesville First, Inskip, Bearden, Saint Andrews-Chattanooga, Wesley Memorial-Chattanooga, and Powell United Methodist Churches. He also served as Superintendent of the Big Stone Gap District of the Holston Conference. After retirement, he served 21 years as Special Needs Pastor at Church Street United Methodist Church, Knoxville. Cabel related strongly to the words of Jesus in Luke 22: 27 “I am among you as one who serves.” While at Hiwassee College, he met Doris Lee Collier, daughter of Elbert C. and Sallie Collier, Big Stone Gap, VA where she was a member of Seminary United Methodist Church. They had 68 years of marriage and service in churches together. Doris survives him. The unselfish, unconditional, loving, and warm support of Doris has been key to Cabel’s ministry. She has fully served right along with him. The Service of death and resurrection will be held 2:00 pm Thursday, January 26, 2017 at Church Street United Methodist Church with Bishop Richard Looney and Reverend William Fowler and Reverend Barbara Clark officiating. Friends will be received in the Chapel from 1:00-2:00 pm prior to the service. Family and friends will meet at Lynnhurst Cemetery immediately following the service for Interment. (Approx. 3:30 pm).
