Carl Henry Huster

Carl Henry Huster, age 84 of Knoxville, passed away Friday, March 05, 2010 at St. Mary’s Residential Hospice. He was born July 26, 1925 in Richmond Hills, Long Island, NY. to the late Hilda Garrecht and Conrad Huster. Carl was a Veteran and served in the U.S. Navy during War World II (1943-1946) in the European Theater. He then moved to Knoxville and enrolled in the fall of 1946 with the University of Tennessee, majoring in Advertising and Marketing. He was a member of Pi Kappa Phi fraternity. While at the University of Tennessee, he met Betty Bennett and later became engaged to be married on December 26, 1946. He began his career in a training program as an Advertising Executive in Atlanta, GA and then became an Advertising/Merchandising Specialist for Sears Southern Division were he traveled to several states as needed. Later he returned to Knoxville to pursue the field of Ad Agency. Carl started his won advertising agency serving many companies. He was a member of Sequoyah Hills Presbyterian Church for over 50 years where he served as a Deacon. He was also a member of Knoxville Racquet Club. Carl loved U.T. football and basketball. While working with Jim Henson, the two developed the first human like Muppet who was known as the “Southern Colonel”. A number of humorous Muppet commercials were developed and were aired successfully in all TV and outdoor markets. He was creative in all areas of advertising within art and music. Along with his brother Ed, the developed many ideas, for Kern’s Bread, Mayfield Dairies, among others, and Vol football networks and Texaco Metropolitan Opera. He loved wooden boats, tennis, music, oil painting and drawing. The family extends their appreciation to those who provided loving care during Carl’s illness. Carl was also preceded in death by his sister, Emma Huster; brother, Edwin Court Huster; nephew, Edwin C. Huster, Jr.. He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Betty B. Huster; daughters, Debbie Huster Smith and Cathy Keys Huster; grandson, Matthews Smith and wife, Hannah; great grandson, Griffin B. Smith; brother-in-law, John H. Bennett; nieces, Libby Huster Barnes, Francis Huster, Mimi Huster Revels, Jennfer Bennett and Andrea Bennett; nephew, John Bennett; great nieces, Courtney Huster Thompson, Binnie Boroses, Emily Revels and Deedee Love; great nephew, Scott Revels, Michael Lewanski, Huster Barnes, and Edwin Huster Thompson; one great great nephew; first cousin, Frank Muir and wife, Phyllis.
