Carrie Belle Atkinson Sells

Sells, Carrie Belle Atkinson – age 93, died peacefully on Sunday, June 28, 2015 at her Shannondale home with family at her side. She was born August 30, 1921 in South Carolina to Ebbie Johnson and Carrie Belle Atkinson, both deceased. She had 4 sisters and 5 brothers; 2 sisters and 4 brothers are deceased. She graduated from Winthrop College with a major in Business Administration that launched a career which would take her to Vicksburg, Mississippi, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, and Oak Ridge, Tennessee where she met and married the love of her life, Hugh Cheston Sells a graduate of Syracuse, University. His career at Allis Chalmers took them from Knoxville, TN to Boston, MA and then to Milwaukee, WI. Upon retirement they moved to Knoxville which fulfilled her dream of once again living in the south. She is survived by sons James C and wife Suzette of Charlotte, NC and Robert A and wife Robin of Roanoke, VA. Grandchildren are Lauren Elizabeth and husband Jeremiah Walker, Anna O’Neil and husband Miguel Garcia, Mary Alicia, Lauren Mousavi, and Jedediah. Great-granddaughter, Etta Craig Garcia. The family owes special gratitude to her dear friend Louise Dunn and the staff at Shannondale Assisted Living. She was a loving and caring Aunt to a great number of nieces and nephews with whom she corresponded on each birthday. Next to Hugh, her love was the church. As a member of Church Street United Methodist Church she was a member of Murphy Builders Sunday School Class, United Methodist Women where she served as VP of the Unit, circle chair, an active circle member and a volunteer in the Kay Adult Care Center. C.B. was a devoted member of PEO Sisterhood Chapter, the Akima club, and she was a strong advocate for women’s education. C.B. and Hugh traveled extensively with Friendship Force and they attended many Elderhostels in the USA and Internationally. She loved volunteering at the University of Tennessee Hospital having served over 10,000 hours. Her keen sense of humor and bridge playing skills endeared her to her large circle of friends and her independence and determination were her hallmarks. A celebration of her life will be held at Church Street United Methodist Church on Tuesday, June 30th at 1:30 with the family receiving friends prior to the service from 12:30 – 1:30 pm. Memorials can be made to the Murphy Builders SS Class or the charity of your choice. Honorary Pallbearers are members of Murphy Builders SS Class.
