Charles Julian Barton Jr.

Charles Julian Barton, Jr., beloved husband, brother, uncle, son-in-law, and brother-in-law, passed away Friday, August 24th, 2018. He was born in Covington, Virginia, to Charles Julian Barton and Ruth Mae Grant Barton. He grew up in Oak Ridge, TN, where his father Charles, Sr. had accepted a job as a nuclear chemist. Charles received his BA in philosophy from Carson Newman College and his MA in philosophy from Memphis University. He worked on a PhD in history, but was unable to complete it due to his health problems. He did further graduate work in sociology, psychology and counseling at North Texas University and Texas Woman’s University. After retiring from drug and alcohol counseling, Charles became a blogger. His blog “Nuclear Green Revolution” was recognized in the Wall Street Journal. Though he was not a nuclear scientist by training, reading his father’s research helped give him a basic understanding of technical documents to the extent he was able to write about nuclear power in layman’s terms. He wrote about molten-salt reactors and their potential to revolutionize global energy. His heart’s desire was to benefit humanity with an understanding of the advantages of nuclear power. Charles also enjoyed writing on religious topics. He last wrote on Amos. He loved all types of music, but especially opera. He was a NASCAR enthusiast. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Mike, his stepbrother, Ben, and his stepmother, Anna Kate. He is survived by his wife, Rebecca, his brother and sister-in-law, David and Ann, sister-in-law, Lorna, former sisters-in-law, Susan and Suzanne, step-brother Tom (Stephanie); mother-in-law, Beth, brothers-in-law, David (Connie), Mark; niece, Julia (Josh), nephews: Greg, Mathew (Kate), Blair, his grand niece, Ada, grand nephews, Zachary, Avi, Waite, Reave, and Benji. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held Saturday morning, September 29, 10:00 A.M., at Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel, 6200 Kingston Pike, Knoxville, TN, led by Larry Dipboye, the minister who married Charles and Rebecca. Visitation following in the same location until noon.
