Charles Reed Jenkins

CHARLES REED JENKINS, SR., 79, of Knoxville, (known as REED and had the love name of "PAPPY" and "POPPY" by his granddaughters) passed away on Tuesday, October 23, 2018. Reed is survived by his devoted wife of 55 years, Joyce Swicegood Jenkins; sons, Robert (Rob) Eugene Jenkins and his partner, Martha Bush, of Florida; Charles (Chuck) Reed Jenkins, Jr. and wife Heather; Richard (Ric) Allen Jenkins and wife, Dee; granddaughters, Lauren (Junebug) Elizabeth Jenkins, Katelyn Elise Jenkins; of Knoxville; granddaughter, Mallory (Ladybug) Jenkins Estes; great granddaughter, Chloe Elizabeth Jenkins; great grandson, Cohen Duane Franks of AL; and several dear cousins. He was an only child and was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Eugene and Elise Reed Jenkins. Reed was a member of the Boy Scouts of America with his cousins and attained the honor of "Eagle Scout" at the age 13 and later "Order of the Arrow". He graduated from West High School in 1957 and in 1968 from Tennessee Wesleyan College with an accounting degree. He was a loyal fan of U.T. sports; and an avid outdoorsman who loved hiking, hunting and was passionate about fishing. Reed was truly a "people-person" and never met a stranger. He could talk for hours about UT sports, hunting and fishing or any other topic of the day. He owned Choto Marina in the early 1960's and belonged to several Bass Fishing clubs and fished tournaments for many years. Reed cared for all animals; both large and small, and his family had horses that he and his mother enjoyed riding when he was younger. He especially loved dogs and one of the family's golden retrievers, "Buck", was a field-trial champion and loved to hunt with Reed. Later another of the family's golden retrievers, "Strat", was a trained "H.A.B.I.T." dog and Reed took him to visit patients in local nursing homes for several years. Reed was a member of Concord United Methodist Church and the Searchers Sunday School Class and truly lived by the "Golden Rule". After retiring as a salesman with Forney Welding Supplies, he joined the YMCA in Farragut to keep himself healthy, as well as a social outing. He delivered Mobile Meals and served his church's outreach until his health prevented it. Reed was loving and devoted to his family, loyal to his friends and will be missed by all who knew and loved him. The family would like to thank the staff of Covenant Hospice, especially his nurse, Shanda Miller, for the excellent care Reed received. The family will receive friends from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Thursday, October 25 at Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel and the funeral service will follow at 7:00 pm with Rev. Larry Trotter officiating. The interment service will be on Friday, October 26, at 1:00 pm at Highland Memorial Cemetery. Memorials may be made in his name to Concord United Methodist Church, 11020 Roane Drive, Knoxville, TN 37934.
