Mr. Clyde Alonzo Maynard

MAYNARD, CLYDE A. - age 84, of Knoxville, passed away with his family at his side Sat-urday, Oct. 19, 2013. He was born March 7, 1929, to Cleo Donegan and John Isom Maynard in Lee High, Arkan-sas. At age four, he moved to Memphis attending Snowden Junior High School (the Greenies), Central High School, and graduated Columbia Military Academy Columbia, Tennessee. In 1952 he graduated the University of Tennessee, with a BS in business. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. He was commis-sioned in the United States Army as a second lieutenant - infantry at Ft. Benning, Geor-gia, where he graduated first in his ACO class. He was as-signed to the weapons depart-ment - infantry school - as an instructor in heavy mortar gunnery. Upon discharge, he fulfilled his reserve commitment in the Tennessee National Guard 191st Armored Field Artillery Battalion, 30th Armored Division serving as captain and battery commander. He was employed by Southern Extract Company, Knoxville, as paper mill superintendent from 1954 to 1963. In 1963, he joined Mead Corp., Lynchburg, Virginia, as mill manager. While there, he served on the advisory board of Randolph-Macon Woman's College. In 1966, he transferred to Dayton, Ohio, where he be-came president of Mead Paperboard Division. At that time he served on the ad-visory board of the Pulp & Pa-per School at North Carolina State University. In 1967 he attended the Advanced Man-agement Program #51 at Har-vard Business School. In 1976, he became president of Saratoga Paper Co. in Mechanicsville, New York. He later moved to New Canaan, Connecticut, becoming vice president of Clevepak Corp., White Plains, New York. In 1979, he returned to East Tennessee as president of Harriman Paperboard. In 1983, he founded Southeast-ern Coal Services, a coal marketing firm supplying paper mills in the Southeast. He retired in 1994. He was a member of Second Presbyteri-an Church serving as deacon, elder and Stephen Ministry Leader. He was admired and respected as a man of great character, integrity, and Godly wisdom. He was small group leader in Bible Study Fellow-ship which he attended for 9 years. He was a founding member of the West Knoxville Sertoma Club, board member of Habitat for Humanity, KARM, and Shannondale Retirement Community. He was a member of the Cherokee Country Club where he enjoyed golf, bridge and Bible study. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Anne Willis Maynard; and his faithful canine companion, Hoots; chil-dren, John Maynard, wife Julie, Merrill Simon, husband Denis, Edith Cronin, husband Tim; and special family friend, Denis Keyes; seven grandchildren: Lee Maynard Kurt, husband Eric, Barbara Maynard, Merrill Kelly, John Simon, Aggie Simon, Meaghan Cronin, partner Anna Estera, and Will Cronin, fiancée Madison Hall; nieces, Janet Eggleston Turner, husband Jim, Martha Eggleston Adams, husband Wayne, Beth Eggleston Caples, husband Jimmy and Becky Eggleston, partner Tamera, Becky Hutzell, Elizabeth Stalnaker, husband Joe, Patricia Howard, husband Charlie; and nephew, Robert Maynard. A celebration of life will be held Tuesday, October 22, at 2:00 p.m. at the Second Presbyterian Church (2829 Kingston Pike, Knoxville, TN 37919) with Reverend Dr. Bryan Wilson and Reverend Harry Chronis officiating. There will be a musical concert beginning at 1:30 p.m. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. The interment is private.
