David William Howe

David William Howe, beloved husband, brother, father, grandfather, and friend passed away January 17, 2025, at the age of 82. David was born August 21, 1942, in Evanston, IL to Kenneth and Wilma Howe. He spent his formative years in both Evanston and New Paltz NY. The family moved to Greensboro North Carolina in 1959 where he graduated from Greensboro Grimsley High School, Class of 1960. He attended the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill for undergraduate studies and ROTC education, and after his Air Force service, an MBA. He was a member of Delta Upsilon fraternity, where he made many life-long friends. He met the love of his life, Mary Jean, and after a brief courtship married her, and she joined him in his service overseas in Turkey and England. David built a successful career at Bank of America, working in Japan, Charlotte, Houston, and Nashville, where he excelled in international banking. His intellectual curiosity eventually led him to pursue a PhD in International Relations, a testament to his lifelong commitment to learning and understanding the world around him. However, it was in service to others where David truly made his mark. A devout member of the Methodist Church, he was always involved in his church community, especially at Brentwood United Methodist where he served as a Stephen Minister and as a missionary with Give Ye Them to Eat in Tlancualpican, Mexico. David and Jean retired to Shelbyville, TN where he remained active in their church. He also found fulfillment in substitute teaching at the local high school. His generosity and genuine belief in the goodness of people were evident in everything he did. With humor, laughter, kindness, and an infectious smile, he brightened the lives of all who knew him. Dave is predeceased by his parents, Dr. Kenneth and Wilma Howe, and his beloved wife of 59 years, Mary Jean (Barber) Howe. He is survived by his daughter, Jeanette Priest Bell (Eric), granddaughters Katherine McCall Priest and Annie Caroline Priest, all of Knoxville; brother Dan Howe USN Ret. (Sandy) of Corona, California, and sister Kathy Totten (Larry) of West Bath Maine. David will be buried alongside his wife at Woodlawn Memorial Garden in Nashville in a private family service.
