Dr. David Alan Linwood

Linwood, Dr. David Alan – age 84, of Knoxville, passed away Wednesday, August 7th, 2013. Dr. Linwood and his family were members of Heska Amuna Synagogue. He served on the Governing Board for five years, attaining the positions of President of the Religious Committee and Synagogue Vice President. During the Korean War, he served from 1951 to 1953 in the Army of the United States, where he saw battle as an Engineer in the 62nd Engineering Corps. He was honorably discharged with three campaign stars in 1953. In 1948, he received his B.A. at the University of Chicago. In 1963, he received his Ph. D. (cum laude) in Mathematics at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Studies, N.Y.U. His employment included: Applied Mathematics Aide at Brookhaven National Laboratory, Assistant Professor of Computer Science at Queens College of the City University of N.Y., Associate Professor of Applied Mathematics in the College of Engineering of the State University of N.Y. at Stonybrook, Computer Analyst and Science Specialist for Republic Aviation Corp., Computer Science Consultant for Harrison and Eaton Corporations, and Engineer and Science Specialist for Hughes Aircraft Company. Because of ill health, in 1987 he slowed his pace of teaching and research, and in 1994 took a Lecturer’s position at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He retired from U.T.K. in 2010, but continued his research in Graviton Theory through his home laboratory. He also wrote novels as a pastime. He is preceded in death by his parents, Philip and Esther Levine, and by his older sister, Charlotte Gottesman. Dr. Linwood leaves behind his dear wife, Joan Linwood, after 31 years of marriage, and three children: Levi, Noah, and Bluma. He had two previous wives (both deceased). In his first marriage, he had two sons, Robert and Philip, and two grandchildren, Eric and Melissa. A graveside service will take place on Monday, August 12, 2013, at 11:00 am at East Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery, John Sevier. Arrangements by Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel.
