Elizabeth Barhyt Johnson Henry

Henry, Elizabeth "Betsy" Barhyt Johnson – beloved Mother and Meema, age 84, of Knoxville, passed away peacefully Friday, October 21, 2011 with her family gathered around. Betsy was a direct descendant of James White and George McNutt, two of the original settlers and founding fathers of Knoxville and lived most of her life on "Oldfields" the family farm settled by George McNutt in the late 1700's. She graduated from Young High School, 1944 and The University of Tennessee, 1948 where she met her husband Harry B. Henry in the Pride of the Southland Band and was a member of the Delta Zeta Sorority. Betsy had been a member of Macedonia United Methodist Church since 1965, where she held numerous positions of leadership, taught Sunday school and sang in the choir. She was involved in Town Hall East, Knoxville Metropolitan Planning Commission (two terms), Food Policy Council, Friends of the Knox Co. Library, Past Regent Bonny Kate Chapter DAR, Past Pres. Knox Co. United Methodist Women, and volunteered at Thompson Cancer Center. Betsy loved to make things with her hands including cooking, making clothes, cross stitching and knitting prayer shawls for her church. She was an avid reader and truly loved to work in her yard. Betsy was preceded in death by parents, William McNutt and Grace Daland Bonnell Johnson; husband, Harry Bartlette Henry; and brothers Robert McFarland Johnson, David Warren Johnson Dinwiddie. She is survived by her beloved children, Esther Marie Henry Gaster (Jack), Ronald Macklyn Henry (Kim), Therese Lucille Henry Morris (Andy), Stuart Nathan Henry (Rebecca) and Sarah Alexina (Lexie) Henry Van Pelt (Bill); her grandchildren whom she loved deeply, Michael Barhyt Henry (Irene), Laura Kendall Henry, Laura Jennifer Lacy (Paul Myers-Davis), Sarah Tyler Henry Seger (Brandon), Samantha Anne Morris (Daniel Proffitt), Jason Henry Morris, Rachel Elizabeth Henry Cole (Robert), Erika Rose Henry, Craig Alexander Henry, Haley Elise Van Pelt; and two great-grandchildren, Isabelle Sophia Henry and Logan Barhyt Henry; by brother, James White Johnson (Anne); sister, Nancy Park Johnson; brother-in-law, George Crockarell, Jr.; sisters-in-law, Mary Louise Tatum Johnson and Mary Josephine Henry Martin; many nieces and nephews. The Celebration of Life will be Monday, October 24th at 4:00 pm at Macedonia United Methodist Church with Rev. Ed Templeton & Rev. Jim Bailes officiating. The family and friends will meet Tuesday October 25, 2011 at Highland Memorial Cemetery for a 11:00 am graveside service. Pallbearers will be Michael Barhyt Henry, Jason Henry Morris, Craig Alexander Henry, Paul Myers-Davis, Robert Neil Cole, Paul Brandon Seger, William McNutt Johnson, James White Johnson, Jr., Andrew Price Johnson. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Macedonia United Methodist Church, 4630 Holston Drive, Knoxville, Tennessee 37914 or Thompson Cancer Survival Center, 1915 White Ave., Knoxville, Tennessee 37916.
