Elizabeth R. Fred

Mary Elizabeth Rilee Fred passed away on Wednesday, January 16, 2019. She was born on May 26, 1922, in Gloucester, Virginia. Libby started her adult life in Richmond, VA where she married Herb. They lived in Chapel Hill, and then Greensboro NC before moving to Knoxville in the early '70s. Throughout her long life Miss Libby truly enjoyed meeting and getting to know people and developed a huge group of cherished friends. She has always had a special gift for truly knowing the important things in all of her friends' lives. She especially enjoyed her employment as the bridal consultant with Kimball's Jewelers, as well as working at Andrew Morton Gifts. She loved to travel and appreciated beautiful old architecture and wonderful gardens. Her friends will remember her for the many parties and gatherings she hosted, enjoying the warm companionship of her friends and neighbors. She was active in the U.T. Faculty Women's Club for many years and a long-time member of the Holston Rose Society. She is preceded in death by her loving husband of 56 years, Dr. Herbert W. Fred; parents Grover Cleveland and Elizabeth Ruth Regensburg Rilee of Gloucester, VA; sister and brother-in-law Ruth and Edward Blake; brother and sister-in-law Carroll and Ella Rilee; sister and brother-in-law Jeanette and Vernon “Flea” Walker of Williamsburg, VA; sister and brother-in-law Gracie and Mac Graham of West Point, VA; and beloved niece Linda Robertson of Williamsburg, VA. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Dr. Jane R. Fred and Joe W. Duncan of Corryton, TN, and daughter Susan L. Fred of Wilmington, NC, and an extended family of many nieces and nephews. She was truly the last of OUR greatest generation. Libby's friends are invited to a celebration of her life at St. John's Lutheran Church, 544 N Broadway, Knoxville, TN on Saturday, January 26 at 2:00 p.m. Pastor Amy Figg and Reverend John Tirro, officiating. In lieu of flowers, she and her family requests a gift to St. John's or to the Children's Home Society of North Carolina. Libby's family wants to extend special thanks to the wonderful staff of NHC Fort Sanders for their loving care of this special soul.
