Mrs Elizabeth Hayes McCarty

Julia Elizabeth Hayes McCarty, wife of the late architect, Bruce McCarty passed away on Tuesday, June 14th 2016. Elizabeth was born on August 31, 1923 in Knoxville and was the daughter of Knoxville realtor George Harold Hayes and Elizabeth Tate Hayes. She grew up in Knoxville and graduated from Knoxville High School in 1940. She attended the University of Tennessee, was an English major and graduated in 1943. In 1942, on a blind date, she met her future husband Bruce, who was temporarily stationed in Knoxville as a member of the U.S. Air Corps. They corresponded throughout the war and married on April 5, 1945. Although their courtship lasted 3 years, due to the war, Elizabeth and Bruce spent less than 14 days together, prior to their marriage which lasted over 67 years. Elizabeth and Bruce had three children, Bruce Hayes McCarty and wife Hope Kahler McCarty of Reston, VA, Douglas Hayes McCarty an architect in Knoxville and wife Jane Chambers McCarty, and Sarah Elizabeth McCarty and husband Richard Barrett of Santa Fe, NM. She leaves 6 grandchildren; Lane Elizabeth McCarty of Knoxville, Lauren Lee McCarty of Brooklyn, NY, Ryan Hayes McCarty of Shrewsbury, PA, Sarah McCarty Matzen of Hermosa Beach, CA, Roger Kahler II of Fairfax, VA and Krissy Kahler of Reston, VA. She also leaves 6 great grandchildren. Elizabeth was very active in the Sequoyah Presbyterian Church and was an elder and involved in many committee and church functions. She loved writing poetry and was active in the Knoxville chapter of Athene and was an avid gardener and lover of nature. Elizabeth also loved creating works of art in pottery and fabrics. A celebration of Elizabeth’s life will be held at Sequoyah Hills Presbyterian Church on Saturday, June 18, 2016 at 3:00 p.m. with Rev. Dr. L. Holton Siegling, Jr., Rev. Mark Lampley, and Rev. Dr. William Barron officiating. Immediately following the service, the family will receive friends in Barron Hall. There will be a private family burial.
