Frances Emma Sapp Cox

Frances Emma Cox died January 23, 2023, in Knoxville, Tennessee. She was of the Baptist faith. Frances was born and raised in Irvine, Florida, later moving to Gainesville, Florida. During World War II, she met Lt. Claude M. Cox from San Antonio, Texas, at a U.S.O. dance. When Lt. Cox was sent to Camp Adair at Corvallis, Oregon to join the 104th Infantry Division, the couple decided to get married. Frances boarded a Pullman train and traveled three days and nights by train to Portland, Oregon, where she was met by then Captain Cox. They drove to Corvallis and were married in the Chapel at Camp Adair. Later, when Captain Cox was sent with the 104th Division to Europe for one year, Frances returned to Ocala, Florida, to stay with her parents. After the war, the couple settled in Houston, Texas, where Mr. Cox was a partner with Price Waterhouse and Co. They made a business move to the New York City office and their home was in Seaford, Long Island, New York. Mr. Cox was later transferred to Nashville, Tennessee. A final change was to Battle Creek, Michigan, where Mr. Cox was Partner in charge of the now Price Waterhouse Coopers office. At each location Frances was responsible for getting the family settled in their new home, church, and school. She was a Girl Scout leader, a Boy Scout mentor, hospital and school volunteer. She taught Sunday school and always joined a Garden Club. After the sudden death of her husband, Frances moved to Knoxville where two of her three children had settled. She was a longtime member of Ossoli Circle, past member of the Knoxville Women’s Club, and past president of Gateway Garden Club. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, two brothers, and a sister. She is survived by a sister, Claudette Stephens and husband John, of Dunnellon, Florida, son Stephen Cox and wife Martha of Knoxville, daughter Susan Watson and ex-husband Don of Knoxville, daughter Patricia Rosencranz and husband Steve of Houston, Texas. Frances had five grandchildren, Rachael Watson Mink and husband Kyle of Madison, Alabama, Emily Rosencranz Bryan and husband Ian of Alexandria, Virginia, Sydney Rosencranz Isaacs and husband Parrish of Houston, Texas, Matthew Cox of Knoxville, and Rianne Cox of Cologne, Germany. Her six great-grandchildren are Max and Evelyn Bryan, Henry and Louise Isaacs, Gavin Mink, and Liam Cox. Visitation for friends and family will be held on Tuesday, February 7, 1:00-3:00, at Rose Funeral & Cremation - Mann, 6200 Kingston Pike, Knoxville, TN 37919.
