Freddy W. Christopher

Christopher, Freddy W. – of Knoxville, passed away Thursday, February 17, 2011. She grew up in Fountain City, went to Smithwood Baptist Church and graduated from Central High School. Freddy worked downtown at the S&W Cafeteria where she met her husband, Jack Christopher. They raised their family in Rocky Hill where their neighbors quickly became cherished friends. After her husband died, she raised two teenagers but was never alone. Her home on Buckeye Road was filled with young people who were always welcomed and loved. She was a Sunday School teacher and member of St. Mark Methodist Church. She later joined the small congregation and family at the Lord’s Chapel. Freddy loved her years at Highland Memorial Cemetery where she counseled families through their difficult times. A beautiful lady taught by word and example with her gentle, encouraging spirit, to: Begin your day in God’s Word, treat people the way you want to be treated, look for the good in everybody, and always be joyful, you have much to be thankful for! She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Jack Christopher; parents, Fred and Janie Wolfenbarger; and dear brother, Jim Wolfenbarger. Freddy is survived by her son, Van E. Christopher ; daughter-in-law, Carole Christopher, both of Hawaii; daughter/best friend, Jan Christopher Corbitt and husband, J.; grandchildren, Kimberley Christopher, of Hawaii, Tyler Christopher Corbitt and Abigail Marie Corbitt; sisters-in-law, Lucy Christopher, Evelyn Wolfenbarger; nieces and nephews, Ken, E.J., Mark, and Nikki Christopher, Patricia King, Sharon Wolfenbarger, Jani Norman and husband, Tony; Lynda Sheppard, Claudia Huls, Christopher Schuyler. Freddy will also be greatly missed by her cherished friends, Jan’s mother-in-law, Bea Corbitt, two women who were as close as daughters, Zayn M. Bowling and Terrye B. Guthe, and her loving care taker, Betty Rhodes. Special thanks to the staff at NHC Ft. Sanders, who treated Freddy as family, the staff at Caris Hospice for their support, care, and laughter, and Diane Brewer. Family and friends will gather inside the entrance to Greenwood Cemetery, 3500 Tazewell Pike, Knoxville, TN 37918, on Monday at 12:45 pm for a 1:00 pm graveside service with Dr. L. Holton Siegling, Jr., Pastor of Sequoyah Hills Presbyterian Church officiating. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Eastern Tennessee - 2200 Sutherland Avenue, Suite H102, Knoxville, TN 37919.
