Frieda Ellen Fowler Sims

Frieda Ellen Fowler Sims passed away May 18, 2021. She was born in Knoxville, Tn., January 21, 1924. Her parents were Edward Cornelius Fowler and Frieda Scheitlin Fowler, and her grandparents were Godfrey and Frieda Scheitlin and James A. and Lucy Hornsby Fowler. Frieda is also predeceased by her sister Cornelia Bettis and Robert M. Sims, her husband of 38 years. She graduated from Old Knoxville High in 1942 and from the University of Tennessee in 1946 with a B. S. in Home Economics. At UT she was an active member of Chi Omega Sorority. Frieda married Bob Sims after college and raised three children. She was a loving mother and grandmother, a devoted friend to many, and she treasured her extended family of many cousins and relatives. Her life was filled with giving, leading, and serving. Having a love for people and activities, Frieda was a part of numerous organizations through the years. She loved her church, Second Presbyterian. Frieda’s involvement there included Sunday School teacher in the Elementary Department, circle chairman, active member of the Presbyterian Women’s Organization, deacon, and elder. She also participated in various community groups - the Reading Club, the Athene Circle, the Tanasi Girl Scout Council, the East Tennessee Speech and Hearing Center, the Blount Mansion Association, and the Knoxville Junior League. She led a rich, full life touching the lives of many people. Frieda is survived by two sons - Robert M. Sims, Jr. (Jo Ann) and Edward B. Sims (Jeanie), Knoxville, Tn. and one daughter - Ann Schirmer (Jim), Lexington, SC. Also, there are nine grandchildren: Elizabeth Sims, Carrie Sims Grey, John Sims (Ashly), Knoxville, Tn.; Amanda Clifford (Winfield), Bellport, New York; Andrew Schirmer (Laura), Atlanta, Ga.; Joseph Schirmer, Camp Lejeune, N.C.; Joel Schirmer, Hurlburt Field AFB, Fl.; Jonathan Schirmer and Jacob Schirmer, Lexington, S.C. She leaves five great grandchildren - Miles Dixon, Avery Sims, Will Sims, Hudson Grey, and Olive Clifford. She also leaves her brother Edward C. Fowler, Jr., (Joan), niece Kathy Babb and several dear cousins. The family is very grateful to the nurses, aids and other employees at The Nursing Center at Little Creek for the excellent care Frieda has received for the last five years. They are also thankful to Margaret Walther, her wonderful caregiver. The family will receive friends at Second Presbyterian Church, Monday, May 24 at 4:00 pm before the funeral service at 5:00 pm. A private graveside service for the family will be at Greenwood Cemetery on Tuesday. Those who wish, please make memorial contributions to the charity of your choice or to Second Presbyterian Church.
