Geneva Matlock

MATLOCK, Geneva Denton – age 98, of Knoxville, passed away peacefully Wednesday, October 3, 2012, at Shannondale Healthcare of Knoxville. She was born to Lena Williams and Andrew Jackson Denton in Sevierville, TN. When she was a small child her family moved to Seven Springs Farm in the Blue Grass community. She graduated from Central High School, Knoxville Business College, then joined her father in the family business, Seven Springs Bottling Co. She was a devoted wife, mother, and homemaker, active in PTA, scouting, Baptist Hospital Auxiliary, Lindbergh Forest Garden Club, and a longtime member of Second Presbyterian Church. After the children were grown, she returned to work at UT Alumni Office and then at Valley Fidelity Bank (1st Tennessee) where she maintained the safety deposit department from 1962 to retirement. She was greatly fulfilled and devoted the same loving care to her customers as she did to her family and she developed many wonderful friendships. She was known and beloved for her fun spirit, charm, grace, style, love of people, and her beautiful smile. Preceded in death by her parents, brothers and sisters, Lester, Claude, Early, Ralph, Fred, Vera, Edgar, and Evelyn. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Vance Matlock. Survived by their children, John V. Matlock, Jr. (Donna) of Knoxville, Stephen E. Matlock (Julie) of Ft. Mill, SC, Nancy Hale Matlock of Dallas, TX; granddaughters, Molly Matlock (Ben) of Durham, NC, Elizabeth Hale Spitzer (Lee) of Dallas, TX, and Lauren Matlock Lurz (Jonathan) of Charlotte, NC, Courtney Quickel Ibach (Dan) of Knoxville; great grandchildren, Alexander James Spitzer, Eleanor Kay Lurz, Chancelor Frederick Ibach, and Chatham Faith Ibach. The family is grateful to the staff and residents of Shannondale Retirement of Knoxville, which has been her home for the last 12 years, especially to the 5th floor staff of Health Care. The family will receive friends Friday, October 12, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel, 6200 Kingston Pike. Graveside service Saturday, October 13, at 11:00a.m., at Highland Memorial Cemetery, 4401 Sutherland Ave., with Dr. Bryan Wilson, officiating. There will be a memorial service at Shannondale Retirement at 3:00pm. Memorials may be made to the Shannondale Retirement Center, 801 Vanosdale Rd., Knoxville, TN 37909.
