H Dudley Dewhirst Ph.D

Dr. H. Dudley Dewhirst, PhD, age 82, of Knoxville passed away Wednesday, May 14, 2014. He was born in Baltimore, Maryland to Harold H. and Georgia Harness Dewhirst on October 25, 1931. He graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1953 and entered the United States Army, serving from 1953-1955. Dudley then received his MBA at Harvard Graduate School of Business in 1957. He worked in the oil industry for 10 years in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Houston, Texas culminating in New York City serving as economics advisor to the board of directors of Standard Oil Company of New York and New Jersey. He received his PhD from the University of Texas in 1970 and began his tenure at the University of Tennessee in the Department of Management soon thereafter. Dudley became department head in 1977 and served until 1986. In 1987 he and his family went to Australia where he was a visiting professor at Deakin University School of Management in Geelong. Upon his return to the University of Tennessee, he was a member of Core MBA Faculty group and a member of the Executive MBA faculty. Until his retirement in 2000 he was Professor of Management and Curriculum Director, EMBA program. He has numerous publishing credits and enjoyed his consulting work. Dudley truly loved his work. Dudley was preceded in death by his parents and brother, William Scott Dewhirst. He is survived by his wife of 46 years Zara Dewhirst, son William Gregory Dewhirst and daughter Hillary Ellen Dewhirst, granddaughters Brenna Grace and Carlie Elizabeth Dewhirst; brother and sister-in-law George and Dianna Dewhirst, and several nieces and nephews. Family and friends will gather Wednesday, May 21 at 10:00-11:30 AM at St. John XXIII University Parish Catholic Center for receiving of friends, followed by a Christian Prayer service at 11:30 AM with Father Rich Andre officiating. Family and friends will gather at 1:30 PM at the Tennessee Veterans Cemetery off John Sevier Hwy for a committal service with full military honors presented by Tennessee Army National Guard and Volunteer State Veterans Honor Guard.Family requests memorial contributions to Ijams Nature Center, Getting Kids Outdoors Fund, 2915 Island Home Avenue, Knoxville, TN 37920 or West End Academy, 5311 McKamy Road, Knoxville, TN 37921.
