Harold D Moser

Dr. Harold D. Moser, age 77, retired U.S. historian from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville, died on Monday, April 4, 2016. Harold was born Oct. 31, 1938, in Kannapolis, NC, to Walter Glynn Moser and Angie Elizabeth Allen Moser. He grew up in North Carolina and graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School, Mt. Pleasant, NC. Harold received his bachelor’s degree (cum laude) and master’s degrees in history from Wake Forest University, and earned a Ph.D. in American history at the University of Wisconsin—Madison. Before going to Wisconsin for his doctorate, he taught in the Winston-Salem city schools and at Chowan College, Murfreesboro, NC. While a graduate student at Wisconsin, Harold was instrumental in the research and writing of volume 1 of “The History of Wisconsin.” Harold’s more than thirty-year career was under the aegis of the National Historical Publications and Records Commission’s (NHPRC’s) mandate to publish the papers of national political figures. From 1971 until 1979 he was a documentary editor and then editor of the correspondence series at the Daniel Webster Papers Project at Dartmouth College, Hanover, N.H., producing five volumes of Webster’s correspondence. From 1979 until his retirement in 2004 he was editor-director of the Papers of Andrew Jackson, first at the Hermitage in Nashville and then at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville. Under his direction, the project published volumes 2-7 of the Jackson Papers. He also published two book-length bibliographies, of Daniel Webster and of President John Tyler. Harold is survived by his wife, Carolyn French Moser; his son, Andrew, and Keri Downing, and their children Bryce and Ivy (Sewanee, TN); his daughter, Anna Elizabeth, and Michael O’Hara, and their children Millie and Miles (Tempe, AZ); his sister, Joyce Anne Moser (Winston-Salem, NC); his brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth A. and Mary Nan Moser (Winston-Salem); and his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Agnes L. French and John Kunkle (Williamsburg, VA). He is also survived by nieces and nephews Kelly Frances Moser (Seattle); Ashley Elizabeth Moser Veneziano, John Kenneth Moser, Jennifer Gaeto, and Audrey Sink Hayes (all of Winston-Salem); Joseph Williams (Yulee, FL); and Kendall B. Sink (Fernley, NV). Harold was an avid gardener and spent much of his spare time with landscaping projects as well as flower and vegetable gardens. He also enjoyed needlepoint, creating his own patterns on canvases that now hang in his and his children’s homes. In later years his beloved four grandchildren were his pride and joy. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. A funeral will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, April 11, 2016, at the Episcopal Church of the Ascension, 800 Northshore Drive, Knoxville, TN, to be followed by a receiving of friends in the church parish hall. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Friends of Music and the Arts, Church of the Ascension, or to a charity of your choice.
