Henry Heath Long

Long, Dr. Henry Heath, age 84, of Knoxville, completed the final chapter of his life Friday, May 17, 2013. The well read son of Henry Clay Long, MD and Annette Steele will join his parents and sister Sarah, who have preceded him in death. Henry earned his Eagle Scout at the age of fifteen and completed his high school education in three years at Knoxville High School. He was a graduate of the University of Tennessee Knoxville and the Medical School in Memphis, TN. In 1953 he married the love of his life, Ann Barnett . Henry completed an internship at Philadelphia Naval Hospital, serving in the United States Navy as the Deep Sea Diving School Physician for which he was also a graduate. Henry returned to Knoxville and joined the Pediatric Clinic where he enjoyed the mentoring relationships of Doctors Cross, Christian and Zirkle. He also valued both personal and professional relationships with his partners, Doctors Hodge, Lowery, Ruth and Powers. Henry's specialty was Pediatric Cardiology and he developed strong relationships with the children and their parents as well. He earned a reputation as an excellent diagnostician. Henry served as Secretary of the Knoxville Medical Academy for two terms. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club and worked to enhance the local YMCA programs. Henry was an avid Golfer, Fisherman, and Tennis Player. He was a man of deep faith and a Deacon at Laurel Church of Christ. Henry is survived by his loving wife of sixty years, Ann B. Long; children, Ann W. Long, Henry Jr., Douglas, Travis, Mary and husband Joe Thomas; granddaughter, Sara; sister, Florence Powell and her children, Florence, Ann and Ferd; nieces and nephews, Sally (Mark) Hester, Elizabeth (Brian) Skyy and Natalie Sisk, cousins Jere, Arthur, Carlton, Lucinda, and Jack Long, Bruce and Cindy Fahnestock, and other beloved family members and friends. The family will receive friends from 3:30 PM to 5:00 PM Tuesday at Laurel Church of Christ with a Celebration of Dr. Long's life to be held following at 5:00 PM with Ministers Mark Smith and Al Behel presiding. The family request that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Interfaith Health Clinic, 315 Gill Ave. Knoxville, TN 37917.
