Mr Herman Edward Gettelfinger

Herman Edward Gettelfinger, age 81 of Knoxville, passed away on Saturday, May 17th 2014. He was born in Galena Indiana on August 25th 1932. Herman attended Sacred Heart Cathedral. He was a graduate of the Knoxville Catholic High where he was a standout on the basketball team. Herman learned at a young age the value of hard work. He worked with his father at Kelso Oil Company until he took over as President. He was also Vice President of Pride Oil Company. Herman was one of the original license holders for liquor, wine & spirits in the state of Tennessee. He was the proud owner of Turkey Creek Wine and Spirits. Herman was on the board of directors of Miller Energy Resources since 1998. He drilled and operated several successful oil and gas wells in Tennessee and surrounding states. Herman's real talent was not in a board room or office but on the lake. Named MR. Bass in 1974 and 1975. He won first place in the Bass Pros tournament in 1983 and fished with some of the biggest names in the world of fishing. Herman was chosen to represent the United States in the first ever International Bass Tournament. It was held in Cuba in 1978 on Treasure Lake. Herman was honored for being an outstanding volunteer with Helen Ross McNabb Center. He chaired the annual Herman Gettelfinger Bass Tournament, this past April was his 21st tournament. Through the years, Herman also raised money for St. Joseph School, Knoxville Catholic High, Holy Ghost Church and any other organization that needed his help. Besides fishing , Herman loved playing cards with his many card buddies. He also stayed in touch with his Knoxville Catholic High classmates. He was generous to a fault with his time and especially giving a hand up to anyone who needed it. He had a deep and prayerful relationship with God. If someone wanted prayers answered, they called Herman. Herman was preceded in death by his precious wife Nancy Lofton Gettelfinger, parents Herman and Agnes Gettelfinger, siblings and spouses Eveylyn and Carl Worley, Andy Gettelfinger , Norma Tucker, and Earl and Marianne Gettelfinger. He is survived by his children and spouses Missy and John Kennedy, Amy Gettelfinger, Julie and Mark Settle, Edward and Katie Gettelfinger, Jeff and Melanie Gettelfinger and Sean and Kristen Gettelfinger. Grand children, Shelby, John L, Lofton Kennedy. Sara Hitson, Anna and Sydney Settle, Noah and Seth Gettelfinger and Lakin and Nate Gettelfinger. Sisters in law Chickie Gettelfinger, Linda Burkhart and husband Bob, and brother in law Ernest Tucker. Many loved nieces, nephews and great friends. Last but not least by far, Herman is survived by his trusty side kicks Edith Hayes, Amy Edgar and Kalin Smith. A celebration of Herman's life is scheduled for Wednesday May 21st at 5:30 pm Sacred Heart Cathedral, 711 Northshore Dr Knoxville TN 37919. The service will be officiated by The Very Reverend Father David Boettner. The family will greet friends with a reception immediately following the service in the school gym. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions be made to Helen Ross McNabb Center, 201 West Springdale Ave, Knoxville TN 37917 care of Beth Farrow.
