Herman Andrew Sain

Herman Andrew Sain was born January 2, 1927, in Lincolnton, Lincoln County, North Carolina to Sanford and Zona (Stephens) Sain. He died on October 2, 2021, at the Sacred Grounds Residential Hospice, Knoxville, TN. He is survived by his wife Verna McLain and three children from his first marriage to Nellie Parsons who died in 2001. Six siblings preceded him in death. His three children are: Andrea, husband Michael Guidry, Springdale, AR; Denise, husband Van Burns, Athens, GA; and David Sain, wife Jo, Knoxville, TN. Grandchildren include: Lieutenant Colonel Dustin Guidry, wife Annie, Germany; Jessica Guidry, husband Jeff, Las Vegas, NV; Paul Sain-Mellner, PA: and Elijah Sain-Mellner, NC. Great-grandchildren include Evangeline, Ephraim, Tikvah, and Shiloh Guidry; Kirra Dendy; Mark Paul Sain-Mellner; and Frank Sain-Mellner. Three step-grandchildren include Elinore McLain; Ryan Reed; and Megan Reed. Herman is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. Herman was a member of Church Street United Methodist Church and Friends in Christ Sunday School class, Knoxville, TN. In 1950, Herman graduated with a B.S. Degree, major Wildlife Conservation and Management from North Carolina State University, Raliegh, NC. He then earned his master’s degree, major Earth Science, from Wright State University, Dayton, OH. He retired as Lieutenant Colonel from the U.S. Air Force on January 14, 1970, after 25 years of service during World War II and the Korean War. After his retirement from the U.S. Air Force, he worked for the Tennessee Department of Conservation until his retirement. Herman was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Masonic Lodge #453, Knoxville, TN. A memorial service will be held Friday, October 8, 2021, at Church Street United Methodist Church at 4:00 p.m., with a receiving of friends to follow. Masks will be required. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The Music Department at Church Street United Methodist Church, 900 Henley St., Knoxville, TN 37902 or to Sacred Ground Residential Hospice, 1120 Dry Gap Pike Knoxville, TN, 37918.
