Howard Louis Loveless

Loveless, Howard Louis - passed away Sunday, July 3, 2011. He was born in Hinton, Oklahoma on December 26, 1924 and at the age of two years old, moved to Friona, Texas with his family where he resided until attending Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas. Having earned a B.S. degree in Textile Engineering with honors in 1948, Howard moved to Raleigh, North Carolina where he met his wife to be while attending North Carolina State University. He graduated with an M.S. in Textile Manufacturing and shortly thereafter on September 2, 1950 married Ellen Briggs Trogdon. After a couple of short teaching stints at Clemson University and Auburn University, they moved to Knoxville in 1958 to start his teaching career at the University of Tennessee as an assistant professor of Industrial Engineering. In 1963, he earned an M.S. in Industrial Engineering from the University of Tennessee and gained full professorship in 1966 and was granted tenure in 1969. Howard retired from the University of Tennessee in 1989 after 32 years of service. He was a member of Tau Beta Pi, Institute of Industrial Engineers, American Society for Quality, was a certified MTM-1 instructor and a licensed Professional Engineer in the state of Tennessee. Howard had numerous hobbies including photography, stain glass work and international travel but most of all he enjoyed spending time at the “Cabin” on Norris Lake entertaining family, friends and students. He was preceded in death by siblings Myrtle, Roy, Dollie, Walter, Leslie, Carl, and Luther Loveless and by his parents Walter Sr. and Ira Mae Loveless. Howard is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Ellen Loveless, sons Howard Louis Loveless, Jr. and Richard Paul Loveless. Mr. Loveless cherished his four grandchildren, one step grandson, four nieces, four nephews and one great granddaughter. Howard wished to express special thanks to Lisa and Whitman Harson for their loving support and companionship during his later years of life. Funeral services will be presided over by Rice H. Cross III, brother-in-law of son Paul Loveless. Visitation will be held at Mann Heritage Chapel at 6200 Kingston Pike (Bearden) on Saturday July 9th from 1:00 – 2:30 p.m. to be followed by a private graveside service.
