Mr. Jack Edward Dance Sr.

DANCE, JACK EDWARD, SR. – 83, a lifetime resident of Knoxville, TN, passed away peacefully Friday, August 23, 2013, surrounded by his family. He was a 1948 graduate of Knoxville High School where he was the captain of the football team. He was a highly recruited football player, ultimately accepting a scholarship offer from Coach Bobby Dodd at Georgia Tech. Upon suffering a career-ending injury, he returned to Knoxville and attended the University of Tennessee. He then joined his father in business at Bacon & Company, Inc., a small wholesale sock distributor. He built this business into one of the largest wholesale textile distribution businesses in the South and remained President of the business until his death. He also served as President and Chairman of the Board of Springfoot, Inc. and was past President and a Board Member of the National Association of Textile Apparel Distributors. He was very active in his church and the Knoxville community. He was a founding member of the Episcopal Church of the Good Samaritan and served in numerous capacities including Building Committee chairman, Finance Committee chairman and serving on the Vestry. He served on numerous boards of business and charitable organizations, was the past President of the Knoxville Convention and Tourist Bureau and the past Chairman of the Better Business Bureau of Knoxville. He officiated high school football for 55 years and was on the board of directors of the Knoxville Football Officials’ Association Scholarship Fund. He received the National Football Foundation & College Hall Of Fame Contribution to Amateur Football Award in 2011. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Baker Dance, who died in 2005, and his parents, Max Hillman and Elinor Lovell Dance. He is survived by his children, Becky Harris of Nashville, TN, Beth Dance of Knoxville, Susan Dance of Nashville, TN and Jed Dance (Marsha) of Knoxville; his grandchildren, Will and Max Harris of Nashville, TN and Jack, Baker and Hunter Dance of Knoxville; his sister, JoAnne Dance Dyer Blair of San Antonio, TX, his niece, Amy Dyer, of San Antonio, TX, and his nephew John Dyer of Baltimore, MD. The family would like to express their appreciation to all his caregivers, especially Joyce Odiyi. There will be a memorial service at 3:00 p.m. Monday at the Church of the Good Samaritan with The Reverend Cal Calhoun, Jr. officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial gifts to the Church of the Good Samaritan, 425 N. Cedar Bluff Rd., Knoxville, TN 37923. The family will receive friends 4:00 p.m.to 6:00 p.m. Sunday at Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel.
