James Sloane Patteson III

James Sloane Patteson, III, age 93 of Knoxville, TN, passed away on March 11, 2023. He was born in Charlotte, NC on March 1, 1930 to James S. Patteson, JR. and Marie R. Patteson and raised in Memphis, TN. He graduated from Columbia Military Academy in Columbia, TN where he lettered in baseball and football. Mr. Patteson then attended the University of Tennessee where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. He was a graduate of The School of Banking of The South at LSU and The National Commercial Lending School at the University of Oklahoma. He served with the U.S. Army during The Korean War as a First Lieutenant stationed in Germany with the 984th Combat Engineer Battalion. In 1960, Mr. Patteson began his banking career, in Memphis, with First Tennessee Bank. Over the next forty years he served as Vice President of First Tennessee Bank of Memphis, First Tennessee Bank of Knoxville, and Park Bank of Knoxville; President of Citizen Bank in Savannah, TN; and Community Bank President of Boatmen’s Bank of Tennessee in Savannah, TN. He served in many capacities in various civic and charitable organizations during his banking career including The Greater Knoxville Chamber of Commerce and as a director of The Girls Club of Knoxville. He was also appointed to The University of Tennessee Agriculture Development Board for a three-year term. While Mr. Patteson was in Savannah, TN he was President of The Savannah Rotary Club, Hardin County Chamber of Commerce and Hardin County Chapter of The UT National Alumni Association. He was a faithful member of Sequoyah Hills Presbyterian Church. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends at the farm in Collierville, TN and at The Beach House in Wrightsville Beach, NC. Also, in his retirement years, he loved playing golf. Mr. Patteson is preceded in death by his loving wife of 55 years, Sandol Douglas Patteson; his parents; brothers, David Patteson, Norton Patteson and Kerry Patteson; brothers-in-law, John Douglas and William Douglas and his wife Peggy. He is survived and will be greatly missed by his daughter, Douglas Patteson Kirkpatrick of Nashville, TN; sons, John Starke Patteson and wife Maureen in Knoxville, TN; William Bruce Patteson of Athens, TN; and James Sloane Patteson, IV, of Knoxville, TN; brother, Starke Patteson and wife Kay of Puerto Rico; sister-in-law, Edna Earl Douglas of Memphis, TN; grandchildren, Allie Kirkpatrick Long-Innes and husband Jack of Nashville, TN, Philip Mason Kirkpatrick and wife Emily of Nashville, TN, William Lucas Kirkpatrick of Nashville, TN, John Starke Patteson, Jr. and wife Sarah of Cookeville, TN, Brandon James Patteson of Knoxville, TN, William Bruce Patteson, Jr. and Taylor Goodloe Patteson both of Memphis, TN; great-grandchildren, Kinzlee Ann Patteson, Cruz Starke Patteson, Crozby James Patteson of Cookeville, TN, and Lucy Hill Long-Innes of Nashville, TN; step-grandsons, Jackson Gregory Wilson and wife Eva of Chattanooga, TN, and Andrew James Wilson of Miami, FL; step-great-grandchildren, Willow Everly Wilson and August Whitaker Wilson; sister-in-law, Laura Patteson of Memphis, TN; as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members. A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, March 20th at 3:00pm in the chapel of Sequoyah Hills Presbyterian Church (3700 Keowee Avenue Knoxville, TN 37919) with a receiving of friends to follow. Private Family Interment with Full Military Honors at East Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery.
