Joe Woodburn Wilson

Joe Woodburn Wilson, 78, a resident of Chattanooga, and formerly of Knoxville, departed this world to be with his heavenly father at 9:45 PM on Friday, June 14, 2013, in a Chattanooga health care facility. He was a member of Arlington Baptist Church in Knoxville since childhood and had never moved his church affiliation. He was born in Knoxville on October 28, 1934, the son of the late James Sneed Wilson and Mary Ethel Guinn Wilson. He was also preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Woodburn and Nina Wilson, maternal grandparents, Joseph Carl and Mary Ethel Edmunds Guinn, and a brother, James Sneed Wilson, Jr. He was a graduate of Knoxville Central High School class of 1953 and the University of Tennessee class of 1958. After graduating from UT he served in the Naval Reserves for a period of time. Thereafter he worked for Tidewater Industrial Machinery company before forming the TenCarVa Machinery Company in Chattanooga along with two friends and retired from there. He was an avid sports fan of both football and baseball especially enjoying the UT sports programs. Above all his passion was playing golf which he had played since his teenage years and continued doing so until he became ill. He also had a love of music. He was an active member of the Chattanooga Elks Lodge #91 where he made many loyal, caring friends and golfing buddies over the years, as well as many other loyal friends from employees to neighbors. These friends visited him on a daily basis while he was in the hospital and healthcare facility. Survivors include one first cousin, Mary Lou Guinn Finley and husband, Michael Finley of Georgetown, Tennessee; a stepson, Danny Crosland of Chattanooga; three step grandchildren, Eric, Joshua, and Hannah Crosland all of Chattanooga; four second cousins, Kelly Finley of Louisville, Tennessee; Kevin Finley of Niota, Tennessee; Scott Finley (wife Diana) of Knoxville, Tennessee; and Sean Finley of Altamonte Springs, Florida; several third cousins, and very special friends Rodger and Terry Parsons and Matt Brownfield all of Chattanooga. There will be no formal visitation times as Joe requested a graveside service which will be conducted at Lynnhurst Cemetery, Knoxville, on Tuesday, June18, 2013 at 3:00 PM.
