John Chapman Duffy

John Chapman Duffy, 66, passed at his home on Thursday, February 1, 2024. John was born August 10, 1957, in Knoxville, Tennessee, to the late Dr. Richard N. Duffy, MD, and Dr. Mary B. Duffy, MD, former Director of the Knox County Health Department. Before graduating from West High School in Knoxville in 1975, John earned distinction as an Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts of America. He was a Scout Master for the Scout Troop at Sequoyah Hills Presbyterian Church and served in other roles within the Great Smoky Mountain Council, BSA. John graduated from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, in 1979 with a Bachelor of Arts in American Studies with Highest Honors. He graduated with a Doctor of Law from Vanderbilt University Law School in 1983. As a new attorney, John served as a Judicial Law Clerk for two years to the Honorable Leland C. Nielsen, U.S. District Judge, in San Diego, California. He returned to Tennessee and was an Assistant City Attorney in Knoxville, serving as a Federal Civil Litigation Lawyer for two years. In 1987, John joined the legal firm of Watson, Reeves, and Beeler in Knoxville and worked there for eighteen years. In 2005, John opened his law practice in Knoxville, specializing in Employment & Injury Law until his retirement. John loved the outdoors and hiked and camped in many National Parks. In addition to his travels, his hobbies included being a craftsman working with wood to create furniture and stationery boxes that highlighted the beauty of wood. During many of his travels, accompanying him was his beloved companion in life, Sadie, his dedicated black Labrador, who preceded John en route to Heaven. They explored the Great Smoky Mountains National Park together and loved adventuring in nature. John is survived by his sister, Retired Army Colonel Mary Duffy Lutz and her spouse, Retired Army Lieutenant Colonel Allen Lutz; his brother, Dr. Richard N. Duffy III and his spouse, Joy; his brother, Randolph B. Duffy; and two nephews, Neil and Andrew Duffy, and a niece Sarah Lutz. Visitation will be at 12:30 PM, followed by a memorial at 1:30 PM at Rose Funeral & Cremation – Mann on Wednesday, March 6, 2024, at 6200 Kingston Pike, Knoxville, TN 37919.
