Judith Ann Stewart

Judy Stewart left the world she loved on Tuesday, February 25. Her passing coincided to the day with the emergence of the daffodils and Lenten roses, some of her favorite flowers. Judy was born in East Orange, New Jersey in October of 1941 where she spent her early years before moving to sunny Redondo Beach, CA. After losing both parents at an early age, she remained in Southern California with her brother Howard through high school, and graduated from the University of Redlands with a BA in Art. She also completed a year of graduate studies in English. In 1963 she married F. Clark Stewart Jr. and moved to Claremont, CA where she taught high school English for two years. She and Clark moved to Knoxville TN in 1966, where Clark was a faculty member at the UT School of Art for many years. In Knoxville, they began their lifetime love of collecting art, especially ethnic artifacts from cultures around the world. Prior to raising her family, Judy focused her creative energy on her own art of weaving and textiles which she exhibited locally. For more than a decade, she was the editorial assistant for The Bent, the quarterly publication of Tau Beta Pi, the national engineering honor society. She was also active in the benevolent organizations, P.E.O., serving as president for a time, and Together Women Rise. She had a curious mind and continued a lifelong reverence for craft, artistry and creative expression, particularly that which comes from the soul. She was a friend to many local artists, collectors, galleries, and emporiums. Judy devoted herself to her husband and three children, as well as numerous furry friends throughout the years. She was selfless in the rearing of her family and cherished her time spent with her many dear friends. She is survived by her brother, Howard Newton (Carol Newton) of Oceanside, CA with whom she remained close her whole life; her devoted husband Clark, and their three children Jessica Freeman (Tom Freeman) of Seattle, Ericka Stewart (Jim Tosney) of Los Angeles and Fletcher Stewart (Kyra Stewart) of Scarborough, England, as well her four grandsons, Ronan and Dylan Tosney and Robin and Glynn Stewart. The family will receive friends at a celebration of life to be held at her home in Knoxville in later this Spring.
