Kathleen Lanier "Flinka" Long

Long, Kathleen Lanier “Flinka” – age 84 of Knoxville died Thursday, October 28, 2010. The daughter of Haskell Dubois Lanier and Florence Grace Munson Lanier, she was born in Napoleonville, Louisiana on March 18, 1926, but soon thereafter moved down the bayou to greater metropolitan Thibodaux, Louisiana. She also spent much of her childhood in Camagüey Cuba, where her father was involved in the sugar industry. She attended Ward Belmont in Nashville, then continued her college education at Sophie Newcomb (Tulane) in New Orleans, where she was a member of Chi Omega sorority. After graduating, she married A. B. Long, Jr. and moved to Knoxville where she became involved in the community in various capacities with organizations including The Red Cross, The Dogwood Art Festival Dogwood Trails, The Girl Scouts, The Knoxville Symphony Society, The Knoxville Garden Club, The Knoxville Junior League, The Colonial Dames, and Nine O’Clock Cotillion. Flinka was born, lived and died a Christian of faith. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, and brother, Charles Munson Lanier. She is survived by her daughter Kathleen Lanier Long Hosford of New Orleans; her son & daughter-in-law Arthur B. Long III and Carlton Moxley Long of Knoxville; sister Florence Lanier Hall of Alexandria, LA.; brother and sister-in-law James Augustus Lanier IV and Patricia Padgett Lanier of Coral Gables, FL.; brother-in-law and his wife Wendell J and Francis “Jere” Long; six grandchildren: Arthur B. Long IV and Kathleen Dudley Long of Knoxville, Nicholas Charles Hosford, Kathleen Lanier Hosford, Wesley Deere Hosford, and Priscilla Todd Hosford. It is important for Carlton and Arthur to publicly thank her care givers for their kindness and tender care of Flinka for the last four years; those being Robin Pataro, Karen Brown, Elizabeth Burns, Paula Elliot, Ellen Lane and Wanda Walker. Flinka was fortunate to have had these ladies as care givers and friends. Family and friends will gather 10am Monday at Highland Memorial Cemetery for the Committal, followed by a Memorial Service at 12 noon at her church, St. John’s Cathedral with The Very Reverend John C. Ross, Dean, officiating. Family will receive friends in the Great Hall following the memorial service.
