Lisa Page Kaufman

Lisa Page Kaufman died at home of ovarian cancer on 12/17/2019 at age 67. She is survived by her brother, Bill Cotrill; her sons, Peter, Ben, and Parker Trofatter; her grandchildren, Moss and Lyra Trofatter; and her husband, Michael Kaufman. Lisa grew up in pastoral West Virginia, where she fell in love with natural beauty and spent much time reading everything she could - often under the bed covers by flashlight when her parents assumed she was sleeping. Reading and learning became a lifelong passion. Lisa identified herself as a majorette (in high school and at Marshall University), an athletic trainer (at Ohio State - where she was one of the first six women to work in that position in the US), a teacher (with a B.A. from University of South Florida), a physical therapist (with a M.S. from Duke University), a costume maker (at Westminster Presbyterian Church for 28 years), a mother, and a wife. These roles hardly defined her. She was a nurturer, a polymath, a storyteller, and a beloved member of her church. Lisa was creative and quirky. Her children’s sermons twice drew applause from the congregation. Her Halloween costume repertoire ranged from shark attacks to aliens, and her birthday parties were the stuff of legend with their road kill cakes and dog shows. Lisa was generous, empathetic, an astute observer, and joyous. She could make fun of herself but took pride in her appearance. She served others, volunteering for and contributing to numerous humanitarian causes. She had a beautiful smile, a quick wit, expressive body language, and a ready laugh. Lisa never met a stranger and made many friends locally and during lectures given as an authority on rehabilitation equipment in most of North America and in parts of Europe and Asia. She was admired by friends, loved by her sons - for whom she often sacrificed her personal life, and adored by her husband. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on January 11, 2020 at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 6500 S. Northshore Drive, Knoxville. In lieu of flowers, gifts to charities championing women’s rights, the elimination of ovarian cancer, or to the Lisa Kaufman Fund at Westminster Presbyterian Church are welcomed.
