Mrs Louise H Tate

Marion Louise Hopper Tate, age 90, died peacefully on March 20, 2017, surrounded by her family. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother and friend to all who knew her. Born in 1926, she was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Howard (Marion) Hopper, graduated from Knoxville High School and later attended the University of Tennessee where she was a member of Chi Omega Fraternity and remained devoted, recently donating a gift of stained glass windows in memory of her mother which hang in the foyer and great hall of the Chi Omega house. She was an accomplished pianist, talented artist, voracious reader and enjoyed numerous activities; among her favorites were cooking and entertaining for family and friends. As a young mother, she loved her sewing club and the Town and Country Garden Club and later piano duet club. Her yard and gardens provided great joy, and everyone benefitted richly from her love of botanicals and the outdoors. She was a lifelong and active member of First Presbyterian Church where she participated in many congregational activities, served as treasurer of Women of the Church and attended circle meetings faithfully. As a descendant of President James K. Polk, she was a member of the Nat'l Society of Colonial Dames and was also a member of both Girls Cotillion and the Junior League of Knoxville. Bill and Louise's deep and abiding love and lifelong marriage will continue to be an inspiration to all; they were truly devoted, loving Christian partners in life. They enjoyed 30+ years spending winters at Indian River Plantation in Florida, developing deep friendships and continuing their athletic pursuits and love of God's nature, especially star gazing at night. She and Bill enjoyed numerous championships whether tennis or golf, but were equally happy just being together with family at their beloved Bill's Barn in Chota Hills. Her sparkling blue eyes could brighten a room; she loved fiercely, was quick to forgive, and loved to dance with Bill. She was truly as beautiful on the inside as the lovely, elegant, perfectly coiffed appearance on the outside. The other joys in her life were her grandchildren and great-grandchildren; she was so proud of all of them. She was predeceased by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Hooper; and her husband, William McLean Tate, of 62 years; as well as her sister, Cornelia Schneider. She is survived by her loving daughter and constant caregiver over the past several years, Rebecca McLean; twin sons, William (Debi) and Brown (Julie); grandchildren, Martha (Ryan) Fox; Will (Amanda), Brown (Jessica), Taylor (Samantha), Carlton Louise Tate, and Kate Rumsey; and two great-granddaughters, McLean and Lucy Fox. The family extends special thanks to Dr. Kelly Baker, Dr. Michael Glover, and Dr. William Kelley for their compassionate care. Louise also was grateful for the efforts of her devoted caregivers: Johnnie, Melissa, Alice, Lisa, Latisha, Natosha, and Kathy. Her housekeeper Nancy Williams was a blessing to her as well. A celebration of life will take place at First Presbyterian Church on Friday, March 24th, at 3:00 p.m. in the afternoon, with Dr. William Pender officiating.
