Margaret (Margie) Alice Outler Gallaher

Margaret (Margie) Alice Outler Gallaher, departed this life victoriously on April 30, 2024. She was 102. Margie was a deeply committed Christian and spent her life serving the Lord. Margie was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Richard, her parents, Bobbie Jean McCullough Outler and Otto Winfred Outler, and her brother, Edmond “Riley” Outler, II. She is survived by her children, Richard (Rick) Gallaher, Jr., and his wife, Linda, of Clarkston, Washington, and Jean Van Leer Burns, of Knoxville, as well as three grandsons, three great grandchildren, and three great great grandchildren. Margie was born in Selina, Kansas in 1921 and grew up in Yale, Oklahoma. She had a delightful childhood enjoying activities of her own creation, story telling, play writing and organizing activities for the neighborhood children. In 1943 she graduated from the University of Tennessee where she was a member of Sigma Kappa Sorority and served as president of the sorority in her senior year. In December of that same year, she married Richard Ballou Gallaher, who was attending the University of Tennessee and in the Corp of Engineers. As an adult, she wrote plays for her church and poems for her church friends, comedies, always in rhymes. She also organized a Girl Scout Troop and was a substitute teacher for three years in the Oak Ridge City Schools. Best known for her humor, faith and friendship, she and Richard mentored and ministered to many throughout their marriage. At 91, Margie began writing prose in addition to verse, and in 2016, published Haps and Mishaps on A Joy-filled Journey, a book detailing her life and faith. Of her marriage, she said, “When we finally discovered that God had a plan for our lives, and by following it, and surrendering to Him, we have been on an extended honeymoon, serving Him ever since!” She was a member of Fellowship Church of Knoxville. The family will receive friends Thursday, May 9 at 12:30 to 2:00; followed by a celebration of life service at 2:00 and interment 3:30 at Oak Ridge Memorial Park .
