Martha Chase Holt

HOLT, MARTHA CHASE - went to be with her beloved Lord on Saturday, July 9, 2011. She was a gracious Southern lady, a wonderful homemaker, hostess supreme, and she will be greatly missed. Martha was born in Lucy, Tennessee and lived in Memphis, Nashville, and Knoxville. She attended South Western College, and graduated from the University of Mississippi, at both of which she was a Chi Omega. She was the widow of Andrew D. Holt, former U.T. President. Hostessing countless U.T. functions was a great joy, as was her involvement and leadership in community and church affairs. During a 50 year membership at Church Street United Methodist, she was a long-time Bible teacher and worker, and in recent years she has worshipped at Sequoyah Hills Presbyterian Church. She loved and served her Lord, and inspired her family and friends to trust Him and love His Word. Martha was active in the Faculty Women's Club, the Girl Scout Tanasi Council, Salvation Army, and YMCA boards, the Knoxville Symphony League, PEO, Athene Circle, APTA (Ramsey House), Sequoyah Garden Club, was the Beta Sigma Phi "First Lady of Knoxville" in 1961, and enjoyed numerous other activities. She was preceded to Glory by her parents, James P. and Frances George Chase, her precious husband Andy Holt, brother James Chase and wife Elizabeth, and brother Bill Chase. Her survivors are brother George Chase and wife Ellender; sister Frances Ann Straight; daughter Ann Skadberg and husband Dean; daughter, Fran Dotterweich and husband Bill; son Andy Holt, Jr. and wife Mary Bond. Her grandchildren are Franny and Chuck Vookles, Alan Skadberg, Andy and Becky Skadberg, David Holt, Chase and Kendra Holt, Jonathan and Heather Holt, Kathryn Ann Holt, Doug and Chris Dotterweich, Dan and Ann Dotterweich, Dawn and David Rightmire, Diane and Nelson Westover, Martin and Heather Dotterweich, and Barbara and Jim Cade. There are twenty-two great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grands, and many cherished nieces and nephews. We say a profound thanks to all who have loved and served her so kindly at Shannondale and elsewhere. A memorial service will be held at Sequoyah Hills Presbyterian Church on Friday, July 15 at 11:00am. The family will greet friends from 9:30 - 11:00am and after the service of worship. Dr. Holton Siegling will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the UTAA Andy Holt Scholarship Endowment, Church Street United Methodist, Sequoyah Hills Presbyterian, KARM, or charity of your choice. All glory to God.
