Martha Peters McClain

MCCLAIN, MARTHA PETERS - 93, passed away on September 17, 2011. Born in Huntington, West Virginia, the youngest of nine children, she moved to Knoxville as a child and grew up on Highland Avenue. She walked to church at Fifth Avenue Presbyterian, graduated from Knoxville High School in 1936 and attended the University of Tennessee. She worked for Woodruff's on Gay Street, T.V.A., Fulton Sylphon, U.T., and Chemical Bank & Trust Company in New York City. After World War II, she married H.T. McClain, Jr. and began doing what she loved most, being a wife and mother. Mrs. McClain was gracious, kind, and cheerful, always seeing the good in everyone and everything. She loved God, her family, friends, and neighbors. She enjoyed church activities, volunteer work, reading, and singing hymns. The highlight of her week was getting together with her sisters. She was a member of Sequoyah Hills Presbyterian Church and previously Central United Methodist Church. The family expresses their love and appreciation to U.T. Hospice, friends, and neighbors who have shown such love to Mrs. McClain throughout the past months. She was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel Wurtz and Margaret Debard Peters, and her husband, H.T. McClain, as well as brothers, Alfred and Henry Peters; and sisters Margaret Womack, Mary and Harriet Peters, and Sarah Morgan. She is survived by sisters Louise Kaderly and Helen Neas of Knoxville as well as her sons and daughters-in-law, Tom and Diane McClain, Peter and Joyce McClain; her daughter and son-in-law Martha and David Reynolds; her grandchildren Mary Aubin of New Orleans, Steve McClain, Emily Cooper, Annie Cox, Pete McClain of Clemson, S.C., Becca Williams, Katie Lane, Bud Reynolds of Kansas City, and Gracie Reynolds. She also leaves her great-grandchildren, Scarlett Cooper and Jake and Mac Williams. The family will receive friends from 2 - 3:00 pm Tuesday in the Baron Hall at Sequoyah Hills Presbyterian Church followed by a 3pm memorial service honoring Martha's life, officiated by Dr. L.
