Mary Horde

Mary Adair Horde, age 94, passed away peacefully on February 9, 2023. More than anything, she loved her family and her church. Mary Adair was a long-time member of First Presbyterian Church, where she served as an Elder and a Deacon and was Executive Secretary of the Endowment Fund for many years. She was an avid bridge player and enjoyed reading and researching her family’s genealogy. She was a member of the Junior League of Knoxville and The National Society of The Colonial Dames of America. Born on August 6, 1928, in Memphis to Catherine Bell (Katie Bell) Scruggs and Christopher Wilson House, she grew up in Cleveland, Tennessee, and then Chattanooga. On graduating from Chattanooga City High School in 1946, she was Valedictorian of her class. She obtained a B.S. degree in Business Administration from the University of Tennessee in 1950. At UT she was a Torchbearer, president of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority, member of Mortar Board, Phi Kappa Phi, a ROTC Sponsor, and Sigma Alpha Epsilon Co-ed of the Year. Mary Adair is survived by her daughters Catherine (Trinka) Crossley O’Fallon and husband Jim of Westwood, Kansas, and Mary Adair Crossley and husband Tom Juring of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; by her granddaughters Anne Adair Lipe Emery and Jenny Elender Guyton McGlothin and husband Kevin, all of Knoxville; and grandsons Robert (Robbie) Louis Crossley III, of Knoxville, Malcolm Adair Juring and Christopher Wilson Juring of Pittsburgh, and Samuel Nash O’Fallon of Fort Collins, Colorado. Her great-grandchildren are Henry Hayes Emery, Crossley Adair Emery, Anna Holton McGlothin, and Graham Michael McGlothin, all of Knoxville. She is also survived by her daughter-in-law Jane Manning, sister-in-law Martha Ragsdale House, brothers-in-law Larry Long, Wilson Horde, and Rodney Horde, and stepdaughter Melissa Horde Kesterson. Mary Adair was preceded in death by her husband of 24 years Edward Hopson Horde, son Robert Louis Crossley, Jr., sister Catherine House Long, and brothers Christopher Wilson House, Jr., and Lawrence McLean House. The family sincerely appreciates the loving care provided to her by all her caregivers at the Nursing Center at Little Creek for the last nine months. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, March 25th at 2:00pm at First Presbyterian Church in downtown Knoxville with a reception to follow.
