Mazelle "Madge" Holleman Gulley

GULLEY, MAZELLE (MADGE) HOLLEMAN - age 88, of Knoxville, passed away on Thursday, December 16, 2010 at home. She was the daughter of the late Albert Vance and Pearl Kemp Holleman. She was born in Smith County, TN on October 19, 1922, and lived most of her childhood in Old Hickory, TN, where she attended the original DuPont High School. She loved playing guard position for her beloved girls' basketball team. Her love of reading led her to an after-school job at the local public library where, in 1940, she met a young UT chemical engineering student who was in Old Hickory for a Co-op experience with DuPont. She and Quentin married in 1940. After he finished college, they embarked on a wartime engineering job trajectory which brought them to Oak Ridge at the height of our defense buildup. They lived in Cincinnati, OH, Richmond, VA, and Mount Airy, NC before returning to Knoxville and co-founding Vinylex Corporation. She was preceded in death by her parents and by her brother, Ralph H. Holleman. Survivors include her husband of 70 years, W. Quentin, son John Q. Gulley (Betty C.), daughter Jeannie Bowers (Tom Johnson), all of Knoxville. She is also survived by sister Wilma Youngblood of Manchester, TN; grandsons Dr. David Q. Gulley of Augusta, GA and Jonathan A. Bowers of Elizabethton, TN; granddaughters Deloris G. Hobson (Grant A.) of Charlotte, NC and Katie B. Harmon (Terry) of Tallahassee, FL; great-grandsons James A. Hobson and Ryan Harmon. Nieces and nephews include Judy Powell of Knoxville, James Gulley of Orlando, FL, Karen Jennings of Signal Mountain, Pat Goode of Germantown, Susan Robertson of Nashville, Bill Youngblood of Harrison, AR, Cheryl Schmaeman of Lafayette, and Angie Woods of Aurora, CO; also, very special caregivers, Betty Latham, Lee Ann Berry, and Nita Cook. We extend special appreciation to the staff of 5 Riverstone at Park West Hospital, Mary Sowell of Palliative Care, Pat Hungate and the staff of Covenant Hospice, and Tom Rayford, Hospice chaplain. Funeral services will be 4:00 pm Monday at Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel, Knoxville, TN, with Dr. Tom Rayford officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service on Monday. Friends and family will gather on Wednesday at 2:45 pm at the gate of Highland Memorial Cemetery, Knoxville, TN for a 3:00 pm interment service.
