Millicent Law

Millicent Stubley Law, age 83, of Knoxville, Tennessee, passed at home surrounded by her family and her loving husband, Walter Richard Law. A beloved daughter of Robinson Houghton Stubley and Evelyn Jones Stubley, Millie was born and raised in Knoxville where she was a Girl Scout and an avid horseback rider. She graduated from West High School in 1958, where she was a member of the “Red Hots” volleyball team that won the city championship and was honored with the DAR Citizenship Award. Millie continued her education at the University of Tennessee where she was a member of Chi Omega Fraternity, graduating in 1962 with a degree in home economics. Her sense of adventure led her to Charlotte NC, where she worked for Eastern Airlines before returning to her hometown to pursue her true and lifelong vocation, the care and education of children. For over 30 years, Millie was a dedicated kindergarten teacher and then day care director at Church Street United Methodist Church, tirelessly contributing her energy and talents to the welfare of young people. A woman of steadfast faith, Millie was a founding member of the Episcopal Church of the Ascension in Knoxville, a member of Episcopal Church Women (ECW), a Stephens Minister, and she delivered flowers from the Sunday services to those confined to hospitals or their homes. Millie met Walter at their church’s grief support group and their union in 2013 exemplified for their families the healing power of love and faith. She enjoyed reading, traveling, keeping up with current events, spending time with family, and regularly meeting with friends she had known since high school and college. Her thoughtfulness and concern for those who crossed her path made this world a better place in which to live. Millie is survived by her son, Baylor Johnson (Anna); two amazing grandchildren, Bailey and Brady Johnson; her brother David; Charles Law, Wendy Law Gray (Fred), and Richard Law (Michelle); grandson Caleff Law; granddaughter Charlotte Law Horrell (William); two wonderful great-grandchildren, Aiden and Olivia Horrell; and numerous nephews. She is preceded in death by her first husband, Charles Merle Johnson, grandson Takoda Law, and brothers, Robinson and James Stubley. Known for her unwavering compassion for children and quick wit, Millie brightened the lives of all who knew her and she leaves behind a wealth of family and friends collected over a lifetime. Her grace, beauty, and gentleness will remain an enduring example and blessed memory for all who had the great fortune of knowing her. The Memorial Service will be at Episcopal Church of the Ascension on Saturday, February 3rd at 12:00pm, with Rev. Chris Hogin officiating a reception to follow.
